When we booked our canoeing trip we were so excited. We have come here before and had an amazing experience the first time. The staff was kind and our trip was great. Unfortunately, this was not the case for this past visit on Saturday, August 20th.
It was my bachelorette party weekend and the one thing I requested to do was canoe. Upon arriving at 3:45, we were greeted by an EXTREMELY unfriendly worker (Maddie, I believe). She was so condescending and repeatedly asked us if we had a reservation. We said yes several times, and then she informed us we were late and the last bus already went out. We apologized several times as she said we were supposed to arrive 30 minutes early for our 4:00 trip. We asked if we could still go out and she said yes, but we would have to wait, which was totally fine. We were really confused because the sign right next to her said the last shuttle went at 5:00. She then asked what cars we drove and was so disrespectful and hard to talk to. At one point, I asked a question to clarify what she was saying and she laughed at me and rolled her eyes before answering. We were then told to grab our paddles and life jackets, but were given no other instructions. After waiting at our picnic table, we had a question regarding one of our friends not being able to make it, so we had to go back up to the desk. Once again, the same worker was extremely rude.
As we waited, her and another worker stared at us laughing. It really put a damper on our entire group. We walked in so excited, and as we stood there, our mood was completely shifted by our experience thus far.
After a bit of a wait, we finally were in the van where two young men drove us to the launch spot. They were completely silent to us the entire drive. At one point, our driver was texting and driving and made all 12 of us feel unsafe. The other young man was falling asleep in the front seat. Our drive was completely silent the entire way because none of us felt comfortable.
Once we got there, they once again did not say a word. We finally asked if they were mad at us or something and they just said no. It was so uncomfortable and awkward. They put the canoes in the water (one of them having a broken seat that we had to point out) and drove away giving absolutely no direction. As noted earlier, we had the best experience our last trip with amazing workers who told us about how long it would take, certain spots to look out for, and how to stay together. This could not have been more different of an experience.
Upon returning from our trip at 6:30, we walked back up to the facility to return our items. One person in our group asked where to put the paddles and a different worker from earlier replied to read the sign and then said “it’s called reading the sign” as she pointed to a small sign that had simply been overlooked by mistake.
I was so sad from this whole experience. It was a huge reason we went to Hocking Hills and our only planned activity while we were there. Unfortunately, unfriendly staff ruined it and really affected everyone’s moods the rest of the day. I hope this can be a learning lesson for these young workers of how words and actions can affect peoples’ feelings. Kindness...
Read moreYou need to BAN LARGE BREED DOGS from the river trips. I'm a customer with Hocking Hills Adventures, and a group of customers from your livery happened to be along our path today. As I passed them, their 100 pound dog leapt into the water and aggressively chased me and attempted to capsize my boat. It got right up on me and the only thing that saved me from being flipped and bitten was that it had a life jacket on and couldn't swim as quickly.
If you're going to bring/allow large dogs onto the river, then you need to understand that not everyone is going to appreciate your unruly, misbehaving animal. Some of us do carry firearms and I was about 5 seconds away from shooting their dog point blank.
This creates a MASSIVE liability to everyone involved. Not only for the potential use of force to protect yourself from an unknown and unpredictable 100 pound animal, but this created a safety risk for me and my companion.
This presented a VERY REAL drowning risk to myself, a risk of severe injury or death due to bites (keep in mind that it could have easily bitten me in the face or neck), and it creates a potentially hostile situation between patrons. The delusional owner of the dog had the audacity to blame me for their ridiculous dog's behavior when all I was doing was floating by minding my own business.
Why do you allow this? And why do you dog obsessed weirdos INSIST on bringing your untrained mutt everywhere you go? I have been attacked by dogs three times in my life already, and one of them was severe in which I sustained severe bites to my face and almost lost an eye. DO NOT underestimate how dangerous your large breed dog IS if you haven't trained it like a dog, instead of treating it like your...
Read moreIt was a last minute decision for us to rent a canoe, but our experience at Fox's livery was great! You need a reservation in order to get a kayak, but you can walk-in to get a canoe.
The staff are VERY friendly, helpful and fun. Directions were clear on where to stop and what to look for to get the most out of the river experience.
The river only has one area that is anything more than placid waters, and that was right after it rained, and even that wasn't rough waters at all.
The only negative I can say is that the place you start on the river is VERY muddy, and it is a very slippery mud. I wish they would put down gravel or sand or both on that slope.
They estimate 2 hours for the 5 mile trip, but if you row the whole time it's less than that. My husband and I hadn't rowed anything for over 15 years, and we finished in under an hour. If you don't want to push it, just relax and let the current take you (but you will have to steer around fallen tree branches).
There are rope swings and pretty decent landing areas on the back for picnics and fun. You're allowed to stop and enjoy the river before finishing to the return location.
Boats have to be returned by a specified time (for us, in June, it was 6pm) or you will be charged a $50/ half hour late fee.
They will hold you car keys in a safe while you boat, but they won't hold your cell phone or wallet or any other valuable, so plan ahead. Water protection and a secure fastener for your phone, for example.
Also, be sure to bring water or other hydration. You're allowed to bring a cooler as long as it's not glass...
