This was a bit hard to plan out, due to the actual site and the national park visitor center being closed the day I went. That being said, there is still a lot to see and do. You will want to plan out several hours to see it all, everything is within walking distance of each other. The first stop I made was at the Los Alamos Visitor Center, which is open every day, even when the national park visitor center is closed (they do share the same building, just different entrance points). The lady at the front desk will give you a walking map and you can get your national park book stamped here. Next I headed over to the museum, which is only $5 per person. It is not a museum you want to miss though. It has great displays and information. The next place I headed to was the Bradbury Science Museum, this place is free of charge and they have a mock up of the Little Boy and Fat Man atomic bombs. They also have lots of displays and information for the Manhattan Project, don't miss this museum and like I said, it was free of charge.. which is crazy because of how much they have there to see. They even had a little area for kids to be creative, my toddler really enjoyed that part and so did I, because me and my family could take turns watching the show about the Manhattan project they had playing in their...
Read moreNice leisurely walking tour of the old, original part of Los Alamos from the times of the Manhattan Project. Starting at the visitor's center near Ashley Pond (wonderful park ranger there), to Fuller Lodge (open), The Oppenheimer House (closed), and ending at the Bradbury Science Museum, it all fit nicely into a leisurely walking tour. Unfortunately, the Los Alamos History Museum and the Oppi House were closed on Sunday. Make double sure you budget some time (~2hrs) for the science museum. Definitely worth the visit and be sure to watch the original movie, which I think was a much better rendition of the events (at least more 'science' oriented): "Fat Man and Little Boy", before you...
Read moreAfter seeing the movie, Oppenheimer, I was super excited to come see the place, but after arriving, I was very disappointed. I was expecting to see a lot of restored buildings and artifacts. What I actually saw was just a couple of restored buildings and everything was closed, and everything that was open was attempting to charge fees for you to tour. Very disappointing. Only giving it four stores because of the drive up the Scenic Byway, otherwise I would have given it two stars. Also, note they have converted this area to a full functioning town and left a couple buildings their to draw you to...
