Short: LA Fitness Corporate is awful, this gym in particular would be OK if it wasn't oversold, populated by meatheads, and you could park without penalty. The pool and staff are bright spots.
Long: The location isn't terrible; the parking is often a nightmare. I stopped using the parking because it would routinely take 20-40(!) minutes to leave the parking lot during peak times (6-8pm), and if you're over 2 hours, you get charged for your overage, even though you tried to leave much earlier. So even before you get in the doors it sucks.
Then it's a typical gym sign up experience - they try to bilk an "initiation fee" out of you, which you should NEVER PAY to a corporate gym. Just wait them out for a no-fee day or they will call and harass you after you take your first tour and you can say "If you knock off the fee I'll join" and then there you go.
What I'm currently incensed about is cancelling. You have to either cancel in-person or you have to print out a form and send it in. I tried twice to cancel in-person before I moved and was given twice the response "sorry the person that does that is on break, come back in an hour". Maybe I'm just unlucky. So I asked their customer service why we couldn't cancel over the phone or via the internet and it was because of "traceability". Never mind the absurdity of snail mail being more traceable than an online form - this is an obvious ploy to bilk another month or two of fees from people who have moved and don't have time to find envelopes/stamps/etc until the dust settles.
So that's just the corporate experience. The gym experience at this location is mixed. There are plenty of meatheads here - never expect the dumbbells to be put away, expect weights to be dropped, expect some hilarious grunters. But honestly. I expect this from LA. People are incentivized to not put dumbbells away because the second you step out of your space in the free-weight area to change dumbbells some hipster-haircut will steal your space. Still, people aren't overtly rude, just the typical LA I'm-not-going-to-acknowledge-your-existence rude.
The main problem is that the gym is oversold. As more people start working nearby the gym is just going to get worse. Going at peak times means your workout is going to take between 30-50% longer, and there is no chance you could do anything like a superset (unless you're really, really selfish and rude, which happens on occasion).
Many of the machines are often broken. This was frustrating. There was a one-week stretch were all three of their rowing machines were broken. The weight machines broke often as well, and often sat for a month before being repaired. This wouldn't be a huge deal if you could ever get a bench, but forget about it. Getting a bench has the same odds as getting from SM to downtown in a half-hour.
The outdoor pool is actually nice, and decently maintained. I wish they had a suit spinner. Also, there are no pool rules posted, so expect kooks to take up a lane just floating on occasion, and also expect some type A dudes to come through and demand to circle-swim.
I think I've noticed 3 different General Managers pass through in my 3 years of attending this club. I've seen dozens of different salespeople, not usually lasting more than 6 months. There's an orange-haired personal trainer who seems like a solid trainer - I've definitely eavesdropped on some of the trainers and he's positive and gives good, in-depth advice. I actually have always really liked the front desk staff. They are usually really nice and friendly, and the maintenance staff seems...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis is the most beautiful LA Fitness in all of Los Angeles. It has incredible views over the protected low lands met just before the ocean, and outdoor beach volleyball courts, outdoor pool and hot tub for tanning. I look forward every chance I get when I come to this side of town from Silverlake to go to this gym. That incredible relationship between this LA fitness and I put on for almost a year now until this fateful evening. My girlfriend and I went on a hike or three hours earlier today raced to this location mailing with 30 min left to soak our sore legs in the hot tub. We were told the locker rooms would be closing in 15 min and the pool was also closing soon. We described out situation and decided to bring out towels and bag with us and would leave straight from the pool after dressing. After changing into our suits and ready to enter the pool at 7:32, she refused laughing to let us in. It was 50 degrees outside and were sitting in our suits staring at the camera as she laughed. I had been hyping up what a great facility this location was all to be let down but a lady with a little bit of power abusing it and ruining the next 2 hours due to her karma. After a membership advisor realising what was going on and we had retreated to the locker rooms to dress he offered to open the facility for us but after sitting in the cold at the expense of one employee the moment and momentum of an incredible day was gone. This was an abuse of pierre and effected me until now 2 days later just knowing how excited I was to brag about this place only to be let down by a single employee. If I get her name I will be sure to list it hoping LA fitness will rid itself of employees that hate their jobs and make room for those that make it s better place. Equinox if you can afford it will unfortunately...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIāll share both sides
Pros: clean, beautiful location/views, nice fitting rooms
Cons: difficult parking, no wipes in the work out rooms or cleaning supplies, lost lots of classes & instructors, WAIT time for machines
Wait time for machines: If you can come during off hours you will be fine but usual workout times there will be a wait to use each machine sometimes more than one person waiting for each machine cause membership has gone up (too many members for the size of the location and they do not limit the number of people)
Parking: it is timed for 2 hours Often have to tandem park and valet car Now they have actually started turning you away to street park but street parking is very limited!
Work out rooms took away wipes & cleaning supplies and told to go on the floor for it but some classes you move from station to station so you are not able to clean the area and have to move from one persons sweat pile to another cause you donāt have time to leave to get wipes from the other room
Told by the manager to talk to him about issue after making a comment while he was on a tour. Then when we talked to him we were told we should go another location and they wonāt be getting cleaning supplies for the workout rooms (even after showing emails were we were told by a staff member in writing that they were coming). He also tried to make it personal asking what I do for work, telling me the personal information of the person he was on a tour with and lectured me about how I should behave after all I said was āand no parkingā when he was on a tour. I understand my comment was not as appropriate as he wanted me to behave but his lecturing, belittling, and power play was also beyond...
