I went to MOCA this past Saturday for the Hello Kitty Convention it was extremely small venue for all the attendees.
I been a fan of Hello Kitty since my sister introduced me to her at a very young age with pencils, stationary, and pencil boxes you name it! Now, we are able to enjoy it with her girls at the Hello Kitty Con. I got us all tickets to attend the Hello Kitty Con and it was a great experience to share this with them and my other girlfriends and their daughters as well.
Let's get to the juicy details of the HK Con.
I heard about the insane lines after lines through two elite yelpers and realized with kids going with us it's not a good idea to go early so we got there at 11am. We parked at a $6 parking structure off of Commerical & Alameda Ave. It was a far walk to MOCA but it wasn't too bad. To our surprise, there's still a long line to get in but it wasn't too bad. As we waited in line, the workers/staff were handing out pins, stickers, HK rings, and smiles =) everywhere. Although, the lines were super long, everyone was tolerable of the wait and was showing a lot of excitement. There were vendors/licensees that sold HK products in the Supermarket area. I got a souvenir HK sweater and custom made shirt. Everything was pricey of course so you had to pick and choose what you wanted. I didn't bother with the shop upstairs since it was 3-4 hour wait and it reminded me of the shop at Puroland in Japan so why bother. Their were a lot of photo op everywhere and it was so fun to take so many pictures of the arts, decor, vintage HK stuff, and awesome back drops in every room! We were extremely disappointed in TARGET collaboration with HK in the Carnival Room. We waited about 2 hours to get in line and we were almost at front when they announced they were no longer letting people inside. The security guards didn't even communicated that the line was cut short and that they were no longer accepting people inside. The people inside took their time playing the games. I feel bad for our kids and other kids waiting to play games. Outside, they had a fake tattoo area, nail shop, caricature area, pumpkin patch, penny machine, arts & crafts, and a huge line for the shop. There ware food trucks outside with long lines. I think they should've had more food options. So, luckily we ate before going and were okay all day. My favorite was seeing Hello Kitty two times and Yuko Yamaguchi. I missed out on all the freebies like free drawn picture, signing, and classes that were sold out. We stayed until 7pm even though they were closing until 9pm for HK Birthday. We missed our free opportunity to go to the Japanese Museum.
Overall, it was a enjoyable experience but I would complain about the venue being small, long lines, and the collaboration with Target being unorganized.
I'm glad my friends and I had a great time regardless. I know Sunday is madness. Good luck to the...
Read moreI recently had the incredible opportunity to visit The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Los Angeles for the Olafur Eliasson: OPEN exhibit, and I can honestly say it was an experience like no other. From the moment I stepped inside the museum, I was struck by the raw beauty of the space itself. Housed in a converted police car warehouse, the building’s vast openness and unique architecture perfectly complement the immersive, mind-bending installations by Olafur Eliasson.
As I wandered through the exhibit, I found myself completely captivated by the way Eliasson interacts with light, space, and perception. Each installation seemed to pull me into a new world, whether it was the mesmerizing play of reflections and shadows, the vibrant bursts of color, or the thought-provoking challenges to how we experience the world around us. I was not only admiring art—I was feeling it. There was an ethereal quality to the exhibit, one that made me reflect on my place in the universe, on nature, and on the very physics that shape our daily lives. It felt like Eliasson was inviting me to experience the world differently, through new lenses, and it was utterly fascinating.
The beauty of the experience was only heightened by the fact that I was able to attend for free, thanks to my friend, who had access to an EBT card. MOCA’s generosity in offering free admission to those with EBT is truly a remarkable thing, making high-quality art and culture accessible to everyone—regardless of their financial background. It was a privilege to be part of such an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere, knowing that art is not something reserved for just a select few. It’s a gift that should be shared, and MOCA is doing an amazing job in ensuring that.
Walking through the exhibit, I marveled at the way the museum curates these experiences. The space felt alive, with each corner offering a new layer of discovery. I spent hours there, losing myself in the beauty and wonder, and every minute was worth it. The intricate details, the unexpected encounters with light and form, and the sheer scale of Eliasson’s work left me in awe.
This exhibit is a must-see for anyone with an appreciation for contemporary art. Whether you're an art aficionado or someone who’s just curious, Olafur Eliasson: OPEN offers something deeply personal and profoundly transformative. The chance to experience such a powerful showcase of creativity, especially in a museum that is making it accessible to all, is something I will never forget. If you haven’t been yet, do yourself a favor—make the trip to The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. It’s an experience you’ll treasure...
