Mid-Year Theatre Review for Drama Production Majors (LA Edition)

A great little theater that’s not so small. I don’t think there’s a bad seat in the house. The sound and lighting were great. The cast of Spring Awakening are amazing, and on opening night eight members of the cast earned their equity cards! That is so cool! The front courtyard provides a great place for mixers and meet and greets. I mingled with a lot of the members and some recognizable faces from film and theater after the showing of Spring Awakening. Everyone was amazing.

We saw Assassins here and it was amazing!! Incredible production value and cast. Also, if you’re on a budget and willing to tack some extra time on, they have a wonderful and easy volunteer usher program where you can sign up to scan tickets or show people to their seats, and then you get to see it for free!! Highly recommend!

I loved the shows that I've seen come out of EWP! I got to see Kristina Wong's Sweatshop Overlord and The Brothers Paranormal– two hugely different shows that showed me how much you can do with theater!

Kristina Wong was such a charismatic performer, and it was really awe-inspiring to watch somebody make an audience fall in love with her instantly. I thought that the timing of the show, copresented with Center Theater Group, was really keen, and the content of the show was hilarious. There was a talk-back post-show, and it was really inspiring to hear how EWP has nurtured and given a home to Asian artists to put up works in progress– very cool to hear the highlights of Kristina's career and see it culminate in a really important, smart, funny one-woman show!

The Brothers Paranormal was very fun. I love the Little Tokyo stage, and thought they did a brilliant job producing a horror play! I appreciate that EWP makes tickets affordable to artists with their discounted...

What an incredible theater company! We saw a production of Pacific Overtures, the most bizarre Sondheim musical I've ever seen. But the East West Players did such an amazing job on this show, and really made it their own. The staging, costuming, choreography, and acting was spectacular. Honestly it's ridiculous how great the tickets are priced considering the quality you're getting out of it. It's literally Broadway quality.

The venue is so cool, and this place is a true treasure of downtown LA and should be cherished and protected at all costs.

So do yourself a favor and go, especially if you can go soon and see...

Beautiful church turned theater in the heart of Little Tokyo. Recently saw a preview performance of "Animals Out of Paper" and was thoroughly pleased. The theatre itself is a fairly small proscenium reminiscent of community college or high-school stages. Nothing too fancy. If anything it forces the viewer to focus that much more attention on what's happening on-stage. Overall, the show was good. I understand that it was a preview performance so there are still some tweaks to be made to the show but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Definitely a theatre worth checking out and the mission of East West Players is...
