PLACE/ROOM I hadn’t booked this place as a hostel, but that’s exactly what it turned out to be. No bathroom or sink in the room, no actual hotel-style door either. Just a regular door and shared bathrooms, one of which could be locked from the outside. The wall plaster was old-style, but that wasn’t really a problem. It had a window (a plus), though it didn’t fully open. No breakfast. The name says “hotel,” but the setup doesn’t justify it. Even as a hostel, there’s no kitchen or common area, so it sits in this strange in-between zone. CLEANLINESS It seemed clean enough. Nothing looked particularly dirty. Shared bathrooms were acceptable. PRICE We paid $107. For what it is, that’s quite high. If this were actually a proper hotel, it would make more sense. But for a no-frills, shared-bathroom, no-breakfast stay? Pricey. SERVICE AND ATTITUDE This was our first stay in LA. I assumed check-in would be easy, but just to be sure, I tried calling the number listed on AGODA. Never got through, just endless auto-responses. We figured arriving before midnight would be fine. When we showed up at 23.20, the door was locked. A woman came out; we asked her, and she said everything was explained in the email. We told her we booked via AGODA and didn’t receive any email. She insisted the email must’ve come and walked off quickly. Turned out she was staff, just didn’t want to help. Eventually, we randomly found a phone number posted near the office upstairs, called it, and the guy on the line explained everything. We were supposed to open a compartment near the office door and grab our keys. Luckily we managed to get in. When we left, the office was again empty, we dropped our key in an envelope. Whole thing felt like a remote, ghost-run hostel. FEES/HIDDEN COSTS No extra fees, but again, paying over $100 for this setup felt like the hidden fee. LOCATION In LA, centrally located. Easy to reach. No issues finding it. Not charming, but not inconvenient either. OTHER NOTES Internet speed was pretty decent. Better than expected. I also got a peek at the other rooms and took photos, adding them here for reference. OVERALL IMPRESSION This place runs itself. If something goes wrong or you need help, good luck. You’re on your own. Not a hotel, not really a hostel either. A weird hybrid that offers the downsides of both. CHANCE OF RETURNING 15% – Maybe if I wanted a solo, post-apocalyptic check-in experience. Otherwise, no.

Solo traveling on small 2 day vacation to LA for a trip to Universal Studios. I found this hotel/hostel/motel on Agoda for extremely cheap. For only $200 total for 2 nights, it was a steal. The location is right across the street from tons of restaurants and only a 10-minute walk to Little Tokyo. Used a combination of Metro A Line along with busses, and it was convenient to get to anywhere I wanted to in LA. I was greeted by Ian when I checked into the hotel, and I didn't realize that due to Agoda and the way that the hotel was set that I got a small room with a bunk bed. He upgraded me, and I got a very spacious family bedroom with a king-size bedroom for myself. Restrooms are shared with other guests, and they have both men, women, and family restrooms on each floor. I rarely saw anyone in them and had no issues besides waiting a couple extra minutes at night to use the shower. The only real negative I can think of for the room was the weird smell it had, but that might have been from one of the air conditioner filters needing to be changed. If you are on a budget, I highly recommend this hotel

My son lives in The Arts district and suggested that I stay at The American Hotel during my visit. Prior to visiting, I watched Tales of the American Hotel (documentary on Amazon). It was built in 1905 with tons of history over 100+ years. My room was very clean with little frills. The bed and pillows were comfortable. Where else can you stay for $100 per night?! I was originally a bit intimidated by the shared bathrooms, however, during the experience, found it to be similar to staying at a hostel. Masuma and the other staff members were wonderful and welcoming. The area was safe for walking back at night. Situational awareness is always needed with the surrounding areas being a bit sketchy. If you travel outside of the arts district you may run into some homeless humans and skid rowers struggling with addiction. As always, kindness goes a long way in dealing with other humans. Be nice and respect that others have their struggles and be a good human. Enjoy the history there and just enjoy your experience.

We spent almost a week on The American Hotel on our holidays in LA.||||Room||We got a couple room. The size of the room is adequate, the bed was big and the mattress was comfortable. The bed sheets had a small stain on it and the pillows were not particularly comfortable. The bathrooms are discreet, however you don't feel that you have privacy while using them.||||Service||Although the staff was polite, their service was awful. When we arrived, we did not receive any information in regards to the organization of the hotel, with that we did not have the towels changed for three days. After the third day, we asked and the lady said that when we need towels changed, we should ask for it at the laundry room, which is not an issue, however we could have been informed of it. They never exchanged the bed sheets or pillowcases. The worst issue is that we precisely asked if there was any neighborhood that we should avoid. The staff member said: "No, in general you will be fine. There are a few homeless on Skid Row, but they won't bother you, specially if you avoid the late night".||||That advice is dangerously incorrect. Unfortunately, on our way back to the hotel we had to cross Skid Row, but guided by this advice we went through it. Please don't make the same mistake. It is an extremely dangerous neighborhood, composed of countless homeless installments with agitated drug users, actively doing drugs, fighting and doing their necessities in the open. Please do not downplay the importance of this and do not expose your family to this risk if you can avoid. I have been in favelas in Brazil that were not this dangerous. While I understand that the hotel is not responsible for the installment of homeless, it is responsible for the staff instructions.||||Location||The hotel is situated in walking distance to Little Tokyo Train Station and Union Station, a bit farther. So it's well connected. Additionally, also on the positive side there are really good restaurants on the neighborhood. However, it is away from most places you would like to see in LA. It's far from Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, The Studios, Malibu and Hollywood.||||The hotel is on top of a kind of night club or restaurant with a bar. It gets very noisy in the evening, specially in the lower floors. So either you choose several stairs with no lift or silence through the night. On top of that, it's impossible not to mention the influence of the homelessness in regards to the location. In one of the nights, we had just below our window, two people having sex on the sidewalk while using drugs. Imagine that we noticed their presence from the screaming.||||Overall||NOT recommended. It's not an awful hotel. It's quite passable if you disregard the neighborhood. However, with these many negative points I would absolutely not recommend such a place. Possibly, if you rented your own vehicle, your experience may...
