Vista Theater movie experience - 5 🌟!
2023 was an excellent year for classic theater remodeling and Vista Theater was just one of them!
This beautifully remodeled theater was famously purchased by celebrity writer/director Quentin Tarrantino in July 2021. The theater closed after the sale to start renovations and to celebrate its 100th year anniversary, reopened again in 2023.
Los Angeles has only a handful of 100 year old theaters so it is nice to see an artist like Tarrantino take an interest in theater preservation to help preserve these classic places for current and future generations to enjoy. I had a fun time reading about Vista Theater on Wiki before writing my review. This theater has seen a lot in its 100 year history!
But its current ideation is a perfect escape for movie fans. Part of Tarrantino's goal for the Vista is to screen film prints. There are no plans to convert to a digital projection system and that's great to hear. I wanted to see Thanksgiving there but missed my chance. Instead, my first visit was for The Zone of Interest. An intense and complicated film that was wonderful to see on a big screen.
The theater itself is amazing. The decor is another Egyptian theme and there are lots of elements inside the lobby and the screening room that add to the theme. The row of glowing statues on each side of the theater was neat. The concession stand serves great popcorn. It is a 400 seat theater with lots of room for tall guys like myself to stretch out.
I don't know what the parking situation is like. I walked over since the theater is close by. It also looks they are adding a cafe or something of that nature in the front of the building.
If you haven't visited the Vista since the renovations or if you haven't visited at all, I encourage you to stop by. It is a great film...

However, tonight we reported that someone had vomited on the row we were sitting in 15 minutes before the movie start time. We waited for someone to come and tried to help by warning people not to seat in that area. One couple almost slipped on the vomit, one person accidentally touched the vomit as it was on the seat, and the smell permeated the area to the point that the entire end of the row cleared the area. As the previews started no one had come and still no one came even after the movie finished. My husband is a nurse and mentioned that the vomit could have blood in it and make people sick. Especially those who came in contact with it. After the movie ended I spoke to a staff member named Pablo saying it was not ok that the vomit was not cleaned up immediately. He instead brushed me off, not even lifting his head to acknowledge that I was speaking to him as he was sweeping under the counter. I get that Pablo is unhappy at his job, but it is never ok to be dismissive and rude to your customers. Especially as this was a health code violation and a safety hazard. I'm writing this review with the hope that management and the owner see how their staff made a grave mistake and should be conscientiously retrained on what constitutes a health code violation/safety hazards. This was in fact a blatant disregard of staff members comprehending the theater's liability to protect...
Read moreA little over 35 years ago, an important piece of legislation was passed called the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It had one purpose - to ensure the disabled were not excluded anymore and that all establishments, government and business alike, were to make such accommodations. And shortly after the 35 year anniversary theater of such an important moment, the Vista Theater blatantly disregarded this law and reminded me that I am a second class citizen.
Movie theater engages in discrimination against the disabled. I have autism and a hearing processing delay. I notified the theater in email more than 2 weeks in advance of my disabilities for the premiere of "Together." The theater made excuses and claimed it didn't have to make any accommodations. The theater does not state the law correctly -- all businesses are required to make reasonable accommodations to any disabled person. The theater think it's above the law. If you visit a theater like Vista and they refuse to make accommodations, know that you can report this to the California Civil Rights Department (CRD) as well as the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Thank you, Vista Theater. I was celebrating graduating with my second masters of science. Instead of being happy, or proud of how I far I made it in life, I am at home crying. Thank you for reminding me that no matter how nicely I ask, no matter how much I beg, no matter how laws I cite, no matter how many degrees I have, people like you will always see me as a second...
