Incredible resource for those with an interest in the ancient art/martial art/sport of archery.
Beginner lessons with ALL EQUIPMENT PROVIDED FREE are held twice a week, Wed. at 6 pm and Sat at 9 am. They suggest arriving an hour early and the classes were at capacity (limit of 25, first come, first served) both times. U will be two hours early next Sat. Also league on Thursdays at 6 pm if you get the itch for competition. The park opens at 6 am and closea at 8. So you really can't use the range 24/7.
There is a semi covered 20 yd range and outdoor ranges are 10 m, 20 m 25 m, 30 m, 40 m, 50m, 60m, 80 m and 90 m.
Taking the beginner classes are recommended for novices. It's a sport, but like firearms the tools are/were weapons of war and hunting gear. They can and will KILL you or others if improperly handled.
That said, like at a gun range, the rules will keep all safe and the fun is there if you are willing to try with an open mind. Can be a super contemplative or a competitive sporting experience. I recommend this place and archery in general wholeheartedly. Gun shooters may take to it especially as there are lots...
Read moreThe wildlife area is something else. A blind spot where you can expect to see the unexpected. There's a sign with graffiti over it says -No Dog Allowed -No Fishing -No feeding the animals..well there is dog walkers everywhere you look and birds feed themselves with with so much left over from picnics & parties and the fishing part..I don't understand why they allow it in Balboa Park which is across the street but not here. I tried fishing here and caught 7 in less than an hour. My son and I had a blast and couldn't stop laughing on how they were biting. It was a good day but still we shouldn't have had to feel as if we did a crime that day. Same fish same water as across the street so what's wrong with fishing there? Bathrooms are ok. Individually & private.O yeah..but there's these chipmunks who I swear one of them is Alviiiiiin! Kept...
Read moreTook the family to the Wednesday evening beginner class. Quite a few people there that day but kept hearing that it’s better than Saturday. Staff and volunteers were knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. Also patient with our teenage daughters. No cost on Saturday or Wednesday introductory beginner course.
It was August so it was hot but there is plenty of parking, a restroom facility nearby, and ice cream man came around frequently with snacks and drinks. Recommend that you wear comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water.
The only complaint t that I had is the range is looking tired. Instructor said it was built as a practice range for the 1984 Olympics. 35 years is a long run and facility showing its age but for the cost and quality of instruction, you can’t beat it for a night out...
