There are a number of bridges for crossing the Ohio River between Louisville Kentucky and Jeffersonville Indiana. I did almost all of my crossings on this one, mostly because it's FREE. Yes, the Kennedy Memorial Bridge (southbound) and the Abraham Lincoln Bridge (northbound) carry I-65 across the river and they're toll bridges. Not the Clark bridge. Woot!
Yeah, it's a "surface street" sort of bridge, so you're going to have a traffic light at one end and it's not built for the same sort of highway speeds as the others but it's FREE.
This is a four-land cantilevered truss bridge that carries US 31. With seven spans, it has a total length of 5746 feet and is 38 feet wide. At normal river stage, it is 72.6 feet above the middle of the channel span. Considering that construction began in 1928 and opened to traffic on November 1 1929 (NINETY YEARS AGO), this bridge is looking pretty darned good, especially considering some upgrades for the opening of the KFC Yum! Center in 2010.
Smooth and easy transition. There is also a pedestrian walkway. As...
Read moreThe Second Street Bridge is indeed the only bridge remaining without tolls. It's very easy to access from downtown Louisville (just drive north on Second Street) and a bit more difficult from the Indiana side (follow signs for US 31 South). There is a broad sidewalk on each side, so I don't understand the comments about being difficult to walk on. The sidewalks are close to the roadbed, so it is noisy for sure. This is also one of two ways for cyclists to get across the river, but use the plates that cover the expansion joints on the bridge. If you want to have a scenic, relatively quiet, leisurely walk or stroll, without traffic (or a bicycle route with lots of pedestrians) go a little upstream to the pedestrian only Big Four Bridge. It takes walkers and cyclists from Louisville's riverside parks to the heart of downtown...

This toll-free bridge spans the Ohio River, providing a scenic route between Louisville, Kentucky, and Jeffersonville, Indiana. Whether you’re crossing by car or taking a leisurely walk along its sidewalks, the bridge presents a wonderful opportunity to take in the surrounding views and appreciate a piece of...
