I really like this library and go to it for both work and personal enjoyment. There are several study tables throughout the whole library as well as computers for guests to use. If a person wants a private area all that is required is two people and available rooms (these can be reserved ahead of time too).
The only issue I have with the library is the librarians. They are often quite rude, treat people in a stereotypical manner (e.g. anyone without children or who does not have grey hair must be irresponsible and need constant checking after) and will close down the library several minutes before the actual closing time.
That being said, if the librarians were to learn better people skills and improved their customer service then the library would have gotten a perfect score. I still recommend it to others.
Edit: 2016 - lowered my rating as the parking ramp was poorly designed and forces patrons to drive all the way around the outside of the ramp in order to park on the ground level. People would avoid this by taking a left into the ramp, but recently orange cones have been put up. This level of idiocracy and control diminishes my willingness use...
Read moreBecause of a lot of research and writing, I maintain a home collection of about 6,000 book titles besides other publications and files. Nevertheless, as a former career librarian and information professional, I know and profoundly appreciate the value of continued quality library service. Ramsey County provides all residents with a choice of neighboring libraries and also through RCL access to the library resources of the state. An online catalog, usable in the library or from outside locations, wisely provides for quick searches and more sophisticated approaches to retrieval. My practice is to check what Ramsey has, it's availability, and if not how I might get a copy on loan from outside the system. Although Maplewood Library is not nearest to me, it repeatedly proves I am likely to find what I want when I am checking the shelves. It's always busy, often filled with young and pre-school children, their parents and older adults. Library service in Minnesota is one of those accomplishments that makes the state great and is a...
Read moreCalled ahead to ask about using a meeting room to do activities with my daughter and eat lunch. The staff woman on the phone was very friendly and kind. Upon arrival at the library, a different librarian at the information desk was very rude and told me no rooms allowed food. I explained that I specifically called ahead to check and she cut me off saying she will notify her supervisor but the rules were not changing. I was just trying to find a place to spend time with my one year old inside to avoid the cold because my newborn is at Children's Hospital needing heart surgeries and my one year old isn't allowed there. It's been a struggle to find a meeting ground during the week to see my oldest for little increments. To the librarian's defense, she did not know this back story, but when they say "be kind to people you meet because you never know what battles they are going through", I really could have used some kindness that day. We ended up leaving in the negative degree weather and going somewhere else to eat...
