This place is a 5 star when school is in session and a 3 when it's not so it's really hard to rate. It's a great student center with really decent hours during the academic year. Coffman has plenty of spots to relax, the main bookstore for campus, a post office, computer lab, bank, some decent food places, coffee, a convenience store, tech help support center, theatre, bowling alley, music club, and quite a bit more. There's even an extremely limited Hennepin County service station where you can renew your tabs or get a fishing license. When school's in session, there is always something going on here. The student groups make sure of it. If you haven't checked it out- go. Just don't bother when it's break or summer session. Coffman gets pretty quiet and everything either shuts down or goes to insanely limited hours. It does become a great place to take a nap though. Coffman connects to the tunnels and East River Road ramp on ground floor level. The tunnels and skyways will take you pretty much all over campus if you're willing to go "the long way." Sometimes you have to pop outside to cross a street, but if it's pouring, blizzarding, or below zero- it's worth getting to know the gopherway system and Coffman has covered parking and a tunnel...
Read moreI am an engineering student at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. It's undeniable that the equipment in the Coffman Memorial Building is very comfy. The cleanliness, amenities, and facilities did impress me during the campus orientation. The most amazing feature in the building is the luxurious Steinway grand piano. However, there are two disadvantages that persuade me to give a one-star rating.
I love the piano, but I hate it after officially becoming a student. Almost every day, there is a weirdo occupying the piano and practicing the piano there. He does not even yield to others and makes a lot of unpleasant noise. I really cannot relax there, and the common place is very useless. However, the staff and security are reluctant to stop him.
The bookstore is more like a souvenir shop. 30 years ago, we could buy hardback, paperback, and used textbooks. But now, they only sell loose-leaf textbooks, and the prices are much higher than Amazon's. So are the clothes and uniforms. This is not what a non-profit organization should be.
Coffman Memorial Union is the facade of the campus and the very first impression to every new student. I like the campus, so I hope someone at the university could really address...
Read moreCoffman is the main hub of the University. You can get information at the help desk, talk to the student activities office, watch a movie, grab a bite to eat, etc. The bookstore is here, and so is Goldy's Game Room, where you can bowl, pool, play videogames, try out board games, or just relax and talk. In the basement there's a computer lab, and right down the hall is the Whole Music Club, where events between clubs happen often. The Great Hall is the #1 place for any university sponsored events (ie a major/minor fair), and that area typically has a bunch of studemt groups set up on tables to check out. Finally, you can go to the upper floors to study or meet one of the cultural clubs....
