Great take-out! Portions are massive for the price point, and food is very fast.
I ordered online for my first time trying the place. When I came to the location, the guy handling the orders was very fast and polite. He did seem surprised to see me tip, though. Told him I did it in cash so it couldn't get taxxed, and it was a pleasant exchange.
When I turned to leave, though, someone immediately tried to solicit me for money. I was going to give her a few dollars too, since I know times are rough.
However, the gyro guy somehow materialized behind me and immediately told the woman that she could not solicit money in the deli and that the kitchen would make her food. It got to the point where he was kind of guiding her gaze towards the counter so I could leave with my sandwich.
I have never been in a scenario where I've seen a guy move so fast. I have further never been in a situation where a guy was that resolute after I tipped in cash. Probably gonna become a regular just for that, though. That was a crazy-nice thing to do for someone he just met, and I respect him a lot for also getting that lady food.
The sandwich itself is REAL good, though. I love a lot of tzaziki sauce on my sandwich, so the bread-to-sauce-to-meat ratio is perfect for me. I'm also small, so this was easily 2 meals for me. It's great if you don't have much money and need to eat a lot of meat. The tiramisu is also really good.
The only downside I can think of is the deli at Stadium Village is small, so plan to have 3 people in your party tops if you want to eat in-person. Worth at least one try in my book, but for me, I love it. Nothing beats a good, huge box of food made by folks who keep the world spinning with their attitudes. Hope this place remains...
Read moreWe all have those sad, slow days when we feel only food can bring us comfort. On one of those days, I strolled into this establishment and ordered myself a plate of "Chicken Fantastic", large and with a drink. It was both the most horrible and most expensive lunch I had had in ages. The rice was covered in gooey sauce of indeterminable character, the chicken was sparse (there was more cucumber(or something similar?) in it). The sneer of the attendant as I left didn't help, as well. I had visited this establishment once in the past as well and hated the food but I thought it was a one time thing and that I had picked the wrong meal from the menu. A second trial has convinced me otherwise. Given that the establishment is still in operation, it is safe to say they turn a profit and that people frequent the place. In fact, I overheard a conversation between customers nearby where one related to the other that it was one of their favorite restaurants. So, I guess you might like it. But if you try the first time and it doesn't feel nice, do not give them another try. Who am I to make this suggestion, anyway? The name of the restaurant - "Afro" Deli indicates some African inclination in the meals. This is not the case, at least not if you are from West Africa. This is perhaps another reason why the broad umbrellas of "Afro" should not be so leisurely applied. But that discourse is not the object...
Read moreThe food is okay but I believe that its quite overrated and not what its hyped to be. I love small and local restaurants and this restaurant is connects the community together, allowing those who otherwise wouldn't have thought about trying African food to do so.
As for the food, the Gyro here tastes the same as it does in the restaurants back in St. Louis. Side by Side test with Abdul Afandy's anyone? If your hungry for a gyro, Afrodeli will do, but be willing to look for other places that may not have a mainstream or catchy restaurant name. I don't exactly remember the name of the restaurant my friend took me (names do matter!) but they had the best gyro and the softest pita I have ever had.
My favorite dish from Afrodeli is the Veggie Fantastic. Perfectly cooked zucchini with a melty cheese sauce on a bed of yellowed rice usually hits the spot. Another popular option? Order the Chicken Fantastic which is basically the Veggie fantastic with chicken (although it may sometimes be dry) . The Beef Sambusas are always great, never had an issue with that as they are crispy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside.
Overall, I like Afrodeli but once you develop your tastes past the introductory stage of African-food, youll start to see that there is much...
