Monroeville Mall is an absolute must-visit for any George A. Romero fan!
This shopping center just outside Pittsburgh is hallowed ground for lovers of Dawn of the Dead (1978), the iconic zombie flick that redefined the genre.
Walking through the mall feels like stepping onto the set of the film—familiar spots like the pedestrian bridge and the atrium instantly spark memories of those unforgettable scenes.
The bust of George A. Romero, unveiled in 2018, is a fantastic touch, honoring the director’s legacy and cementing the mall’s status as a cultural landmark.
For Romero enthusiasts, Monroeville Mall is more than just a place to shop; it’s a living piece of cinema history.
You can practically feel the rebellious spirit of the ‘70s and Romero’s biting commentary on consumerism in every corner. The quieter parts of the mall only add to its eerie charm, making it easy to imagine zombies shuffling through the corridors, just like in the movie.
Occasional fan-led tours or local guides sharing behind-the-scenes stories about the filming process make the experience even more special.
Sure, the mall itself isn’t as bustling as it once was, but for fans, that only enhances the post-apocalyptic vibe that Dawn of the Dead captured so perfectly. It’s a place where you can connect with Romero’s genius and pay homage to a horror masterpiece.
Whether you’re snapping photos of iconic locations or just soaking in the atmosphere, Monroeville Mall is a pilgrimage every horror buff...
Read moreDispite the fact that there was big fight that broke out here after Christmas last year; or even the fact that there was a shooting that happened here on the weekend; I still think this mall is doing okay. Yes I know it ain't as good as it was back then; but I still think this mall is one of the best in western Pennsylvania. At least one of the better malls in western Pennsylvania. So what if there are a few vacancies in this mall; at least most of it is still occupied. Some of them are being filled and even expanded. I don't think this mall is a dump! I was bummed out that RadioShack left the mall and moved to the Miracle Mile strip mall; and I also didn't like the fact that FYE is no longer here. At least there's more hope for this mall than there is for the Clearview Mall in Butler, PA. One thing that truned me on for this mall is not only the fact that it was in the 1978 version of Dawn of the Dead; but the fact that they have an arcade in this mall! When was the last time you saw that in a mall!? Let along have a laser tag! How cool is that!
Cons: The mall is located in a bad neighborhood and there seems to be a lot of problems lately with another brawl that happened in a restaurant that's attach to the mall. Luckily this brawl didn't happen in the mall (thank goodness) and the restrooms get kind of filthy sometimes; especially the Food...
Read moreThis is a very unprofessional establishment. I was working at the Monroeville Convention Center and decided to go to the food court located inside the Monroeville mall. My lunch break was only a half hour so I was only in the mall for at most 20 minutes. When I came back to my car I seen a scratch on the rear end with fresh white paint. I noticed a security guard patrolling the parking lot and inquired if he had witnessed the accident. He said no and that I should call and speak with the head of security and file a police report. When I spoke to the head of security he continued to give me the run around and finally said that they could not see my car clearly when I entered the parking lot so basically they could not prove if it happened on their property. When the police arrived they treated me as if I had stolen the car or was a criminal and not as if I was reporting a hit and run. He acted shocked that a young person of color owned a mercedes benz out right and ran a back round check on me to see if I had any warrants! He was more concerned with the inside of my car than the actual damage I was reporting. If this is how the professionals and police conduct themselves I can understand why the children behave so poorly at this establishment. I will not under any circumstance be returning to this mall or town. Word to the...
