The Custom House is exactly what you think it was. It was constructed in 1827 by the Mexican Government to collect custom duties from foreign shipping, a principal revenue source when Monterey was the capital of Alta California.
There are nice displays of the type of items that came through here for sale/trade. The are docents here to answer questions and a nice gift show with random nicknacks to purchase.
