I wouldn't even give this hotel one star but I had to pick one in order to leave this post. Six months ago we visited Monterey and had a great time. The hotel was nice put together staff was friendly breakfast was good. Thinking I would have the same service, breakfast, hospitality. I booked again for this last weekend in February. When I got there I asked about breakfast and they said they took that away. Okay not a deal-breaker but it was nice to have breakfast. We check in and got our same hotel room thinking cool it was a nice room the first time had booked a great Mirror full length mirror. The room was put together nice. Well not this time the room was not put together there was spackle all over the walls, holes in the bathroom door, door hinge frame separated from being kicked in, and the light fixtures over the bathroom were a mess. They had a picture covering a square hole in the wall to cover the space for unknown reasons not even sure what the space was for. Also the sink would not drain so when you were just brushing your teeth or when I was washing my face the sink filled did not drain and you had to turn the water off wait about 10 minutes and then it finally drained. The water pressure in the room was atrocious it would be hard pressure for a minute and then like it was raining trickling water on you. Not sure what's going on or why this happened but our first visit was way better than our last visit. I brought this up to the front desk person she told me a manager would contact me, someone called listen to my message waited for it to end did not leave a message and then hung up. I ask the front desk when I got back and she said told me that the manager get was giving me $60 back from my $500 booking. I laughed at her and said that's a slap in the face and not worth my time. My family consists of my husband my six-year-old son and myself this hotel was completely disgusting and I will never ever book a room again. I have pictures of the way that the room was put behind the bed there was blood smeared or soda smeared from the previous visit I don't know. If you don't have rooms available or rooms up to par you should not book them out. And housekeeping needs to get up on their duties. That's unacceptable and uncalled for. I did ask to speak to a manager twice was told once they were at Costco and the second time they hadn't got it in for the day yet still have not talked to anybody and it's been one week since we left. Poor poor customer service and if you expect anybody to return you should take a look at that. I will never return!

Horrible Experience - Avoid the Accessibility Room My stay at Cannery Row Inn in Monterey was the worst hotel experience I've ever had. We were given an accessibility room, but it was anything but accessible. The furniture was scratched and damaged, and there was a large tear in the carpet. The shower head was adjustable, but it kept sliding back to the bottom if raised, making it practically unusable. Worst of all, the bathroom door sticks so badly that my wife and I both got trapped inside at different points and needed each other's help to get out. This would be a nightmare for someone with accessibility needs, especially if they were in a wheelchair. The room overlooked a busy street, and the noise was unbearable. I was shocked that it's even legal to rent out such a noisy room. I had hoped it would be quieter at night, but loud cars drove by constantly. Around 4 AM, delivery trucks heading to Cannery Row added to the noise, making it impossible to sleep. Even with noise-canceling headphones, I could still hear the traffic all night long. It's a shame because, in the rare moments of quiet, you could just make out the sound of the waves. The only positive thing I can say is that the location is great—just a block from the ocean and near lots of fun things to walk to. But that doesn't make up for the awful experience we had. If you're considering a room on their terrace, be aware that everyone can access the space outside your room. You'll have no privacy and certainly won't feel comfortable sleeping with your door open. When I checked out the next day, the employee at the front desk was on her cell phone and seemed completely uninterested in my concerns. I mentioned the issue with the bathroom door, explaining that it would be a serious problem for someone in a wheelchair, and she just looked at me blankly. When I brought up how poorly I slept due to the road noise, she simply responded, "Yeah, it's a busy road." No apologies, no sympathy—nothing. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, especially if you have accessibility needs. The location is great, but the poor condition of the room and the lack of concern from the staff make it a place to avoid.

DO NOT STAY HERE, especially if you are a female staying in a room alone. It’s unsafe and unsanitary.

We booked two separate rooms for 1 night as part of a work trip. The bad experience started when we received a voicemail at 6:30pm asking where we were and if we were still coming. We found that odd since it wasn’t too far after check in was even allowed and we were traveling all day with no phone signal. I called the hotel back to let them know we were on our way. He demanded to know our exact ETA. We arrived around 8:30pm, which is not an unusual time to arrive on a travel day. The person at the front desk left the hotel immediately after we checked in.

As soon as I opened the door to my room I was hit with a sour, foul smell and was surprised at just how run down and dirty the room looked. The furniture was broken, the carpet was old and dirty. It looks absolutely nothing like the photos online. At that time I had been traveling since 3am and just wanted to get through the night.

While getting in bed, I stepped in something wet directly next to the bed, close to the nightstand. There was no reason for it to be wet there - it wasn’t near the bathroom, water couldn’t have gotten there, and I didn’t have any water that could have been spilled. I leaned over to smell it and it was without a doubt VOMIT on the floor next to the bed. That was what I smelled when I walked in the room. I went to the front desk, no one was there. I called the number on the sign and said there’s vomit on the floor next to the bed. The immediate response was “do you mean near the bathroom door?” I told him by the bed and not near thr bathroom door and he kept insisting there should have been vomit by the bathroom not the bed. It was absolutely bizarre. The person was completely unsurprised about the vomit. He told me he would refund me and I can leave. I asked if there was another room and he became angry, told me they were full and I can leave.

I told him I would need my coworker’s room refunded as well. We only had one car, and she is younger and now is very uncomfortable staying here alone knowing the rooms are not cleaned and are extremely unsanitary. He asked me her name and room number. I could hear him flipping through papers and suddenly he said - “no I’m not refunding her.” It was extremely troubling that he made that decision after looking up her information.

I told him again she has to leave with me, we have one car, and if I have to leave because of their unsanitary practices she also needs to leave and be refunded. He told me to “leave her there and come back for her in the morning.” This was EXTREMELY concerning since he definitely looked her up before insisting that I leave and she stay. It became a safety issue at that point and she was not going to stay in a place where a male employee with access to her room was insisting I leave the property and leave her there alone. I tried again to tell him that she needs to leave because she is now uncomfortable and feels very unsafe and he told me “talking to you is like talking to a brick wall, I’m done.”

We both ended up leaving and finding much cleaner and safer accommodations elsewhere. Everything about our experience was concerning from both a safety and a cleanliness perspective. It doesn’t appear the rooms are cleaned, and the behavior of the person at the desk should be a great concern to any female choosing to stay at this hotel. While it sounds like the location here is good, there are much nicer, cheaper, safer accommodations in Monterey. I’m glad we didn’t stick around to find out just why he was insisting I leave her behind alone. The location convenience...

Husband booked this hotel for a surprised wedding anniversary and birthday on a booking website. He thought this hotel was great for its location but lo and behold staff service was horrid. It took us 3.5 hours to get to Monterey. I tried calling the hotel to let them know that we were going to get there 10 minutes late but the front desk kept hanging up the phone. I called several times and the same thing happened. When I finally got a hold of someone, it was around 10:15pm. Spoke to a woman that did not introduced herself, she just said "hello". I told her that we have reservation and just letting her know that our expected time of arrival was 11:10 per our GPS. She immediately told me that she was going to cancel our reservation because she couldn't wait for us for 10 minutes. She told me they closed at 11pm. I told her I did not want to cancel. She started crying on the phone telling me she was having a bad day, she just got back from the hospital and she couldnt do it anymore. She stated further that she was tired of people having her wait and she was going to just cancel the reservation then hung up the phone. We were in utter disbelief! I called back again and the same woman answered the phone after several attempts. I asked to speak to her manager and she flat out told me there was no manager around. That it was just her. She then told me that she cancelled the reservation and she had the right to "refused service to anyone". My husband then interjected in our conversation and told the woman that we booked through a booking website and that we were going to be leaving a bad review. She started crying again. She said not to let her manager know, that she was having a bad day etc etc. My husband told her that we drove for almost four hours, it was late at night already, we were almost there ( it was right around 1045pm our ETA was 11:10) and mentioned about our kid in the car. While my husband was on the phone with her, I was panicking and started looking for another hotel online on my phone. While I was frantically looking for another accommodation on my phone, the woman hung up on my husband. Moments later, we received a phone call from the same woman, telling my husband to start over and forget what happened. She said she would help us if we give her $20 upon arrival for her to stay and help us, if not she would just cancel. My husband told her that we didn't have cash and that she should just bill us to our credit card. She suggested for us to go to a gas station to pull out cash for her. Mind you, it was almost 11pm. My husband apologized and told her that we wouldnt be able to go to gas station just to give her money. She then hung up. Luckily, while my husband was talking to the woman, I was able to booked an emergency room at Marriot hotel. Overall, our experience at Cannery Row Inn was horrible, disgusting and distasteful, and we didnt even stay! It was just a phone call and the service...
