I love looking at state capitols, so when we were in Foley, Alabama, on our way to Birmingham, we decided to stay the night in Montgomery to see the capitol building.

I'm so glad we did.

We couldn't get inside the building because it was the weekend, but there are a lot of memorials filled with rich history about not only Montgomery but about the state of Alabama.

Now, we could have read the history on Google or ChatGPT, but there's nothing quite like standing on the land where everything happened while reading about it.

While I'll never know what it was like back then, I can appreciate everything everyone during that time in our nation's history went through to grant us the freedoms we have today.

History is great because we can learn from it or suffer the same consequences from the past.

The memorials were eye-opening for me because I grew up in California and we didn't learn about Alabama's history.

I'm so glad we stopped at the capitol building today as we make our way to Birmingham tomorrow.

I highly recommend stopping at the Montgomery Capitol building and spending a couple of hours learning the history and imagining what those in the past endured in order to give you (if you're an American) your...

Worst experience with a class field trip by the officers at the capital building. We had this trooper with the little man syndrome grab a special needs child by the arm and made this child walk back up a flight of stairs and come back down because he didnt us the handrail properly. I'm sorry but isnt that the responsibility of the teachers and his parent that was present to dow. I will never be ok with a person regardless of there standing or position to put there hands on a child for any reason. Dont get me wrong I understand the importance of doing something safe but after the child was already at the bottom of the stairs safely, to make him do it again seems to be the unsafe thing to do. Great job Alabama Troopers. What a way of keeping our capital safe, by demeaning small children even those with special needs. Needless to say I'm very disappointed with the lack of respect we received being the sole reason that any one person there even has a job. Just a small review on how our supposed to be special...

A weekend trip to Montgomery, AL to actually attend the Salute to Veterans Bowl at the Cramton Stadium. Western Michigan University, WMU, was facing off against University of Southern Alabama, USA, in the 11th IS4S Bowl Game. Had some down time on Saturday Dec, 14th and just walked around the down town area. Walked the streets; Bibbs, Commerce, Dexter and Madison. Capitol building is located Dexter St., and I did not tour the inside of the building. I did not use public transportation, but did see shuttle buses. I did not use street parking, kept my vehicle parked in hotel lot. But was informed by hotel staff that street meter parking was free on the weekend. Only ate at one place in the downtown area during my stay, which was NYC Gyros on Commerce St. My other dining experiences were hotel breakfasts and WMU tailgate event. My only regret is no pics of Cramton Stadium, which had great seats and decent bathrooms. Would I visit Montgomery, AL again?Absolutely! A city rich in history worth...

A beautiful building that is filled with history. It was completed in 1851, and it was where the Confederacy began in 1861. Just think of the decisions that have been made here over time, and you can see many of the rooms where these historical events took place. Alabama preserves its past, and the State Capitol is no exception. As for the present, well, Alabama is in good hands because the powers that be always have an eye for the future, and that means an even greater State of Alabama for everyone. There is no charge to enter and walk around and experience what so many others before you have. Not everything is accessible to the public for security reasons, but you will come away with a memory that will last a lifetime. Photos are allowed and I took many. George Vreeland Hill

Spent 30 minutes doing the self-guided tour with the pamphlet. As others have said, more of a museum piece as it is not active with the house, senate and judiciary meeting in other buildings. Have been to nearly 20 state and provincial capitol buildings and this is at the bottom of the list. Very plain, the grounds lack any real gardens or statuary, no information highlighting the state or directing you on how to learn more, no website info or signage directing you to the entrance and in need of some upkeep (plaster on the floor, doors split, etc.). But still, a good visit and glad to have stopped by but would rate a 3.7.
