We went to Montgomery to visit several of the Civil Rights Museum and points of interest and I knew I wanted to see the Dexter Parsonage to see where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King lived during their time in Montgomery. I found the house very easily with free parking available. I wasn't sure if tours were being given at the time but I knew it must have been meant for us to see when the security guard said "Looking for the tour?" I did not hesitate to go in and we were greeted by two women unbeknownst to us, has connections to the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and Dr. King. To me that alone was special. They have kept the house going and treats it with so much love and care. We paid for the tour and it was worth every cent; and in return we received detailed personal stories that are simply priceless. Each room in the house has its own story. It does get emotional and I was in awe of the furniture and items which takes you back in time. I will say it is the best tour I have experienced and if it is just you and the group you came with; the experience is tripled we were not rushed. All of our questions were answered. I want to give a huge thank you to the ladies' operating the parsonage. The overall experience was so pleasant. I adore this place and will...
Read moreMy best friend and I stopped here on our way to Florida. So glad we did it was a moving experience. There is parking right behind the house and you walk in and pay your fee at the house next to the parsonage. It was $30 for all four of us to go and well worth the money. Plam on spending about an hour there. We did not have Dr Sherry give us a tour but the woman who did our tour was very knowledgeable and kind we enjoyed her very much. When you first go in there's a video that they show you and explain the people who were making a difference in the area leading up to Martin Luther King and the people that worked side-by-side with him. I love the way they tied and Rosa Parks and the bus boycott with what was going on at the time. It wasn't just about Martin Luther King but everybody who work together to make a difference. Next they take you into the parsonage itself and explain each of the rooms and the part they played in Martin Luther King's life and the decisions that were being made during that time. The most moving part of the whole house tour is at the end in the kitchen. They play one of his sermons that describes a moment that he had in the kitchen we all were moved to tears!...
Read more10/08/2016 The Dexter Parsonage Museum & Interpretive Center was one of the most rewarding tours that we could have experienced. To be able to transcend back into the life and legacy of the late, great, and symbolic leader of the Civil Right Movement – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s and his family was breathtaking. The tour couldn’t have been illustrated better by anyone other than Dr. Shirley Cherry. Dr. Cherry exemplifies her passion and compassion for love and equality for all which was evident during the tour, which I might add she stayed after hours to do… (AGAPE LOVE) We personally want to thank Dr. Cherry for the experience and the enthusiasm she generates, which is very contagious. This tour is a Must Do when you visit Montgomery, but make sure you tour with Dr. Cherry I promise you, you want leave the same way you came in…Emotionally! Thank you, Sharon & Tony Fuller “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away” –...
