I had the weirdest experience at the visitor center. I stopped in to find out about the name of "Ney Springs" because I couldn't recall. Anyway, when I went in, the lady working was talking with a man... Maybe it was flirtatious. She was offering to show him around town. I browsed the brochures while they talked. Finally, she turned her attention towards me and said, "Hi, how are you today?" I turned and approached the counter, "I'm fine. I wondered if you could help me, I cannot remember the name of a waterfall I hiked to last year, I'd like to visit again..." And I gave her a brief description. Her face was blank, so I concluded, "maybe you have no idea what I'm talking about..." (Smiling!) Instead of answering me at all, she said, pertly, as if I'd interrupted them, "Well, I'm actually still helping this man... and you need to sign the guest book." Completely taken aback, because I'd taken her greeting to me to be an invitation to talk to her, I said, "why do I have to sign it?" "Well, so we know how much staff we need!" She abruptly turns back to the man and they resume their private conversation. I slowly signed the guestbook... Looked at her again , hoping she might find it within her to consider my question. She didn't look at me. Slowly, I turned and very slowly I walked out. I kept thinking she'd say, "oh ma'am... About that waterfall...." But she didn't address another word too me. I was completely flummoxed. Still can't figure out what I did to offend this lady or why she couldn't quickly answer my question. Even if she didn't know the waterfall, she should have said so... Why should I stand around and wait while she flirts? Just to find out she doesn't know. It's still a mystery to me, if she knew where I meant or not! So I had to ask Google, which told me the name of the waterfall instantly. I wish I hadn't signed the guestbook and normally I want little places in little towns to stay open.... But in this case. Close it up. Useless. Can't even give a quick answer to a...
Read moreAwesome little town near the mountain, people are friendly and nice they will guide you even if you are lost in your life like me, but do get a map of the mountain and the open trails before venturing out and becoming eagle food. Please take water and fill up your gas near by. Unlike me Please listen to those people at the visitors center as they know what they talking they are not kidding when they say that altitude will make your brains hurt. Also ask them about the lake which is near the mountain. It's supposed to be very very beautiful and green with the snow capped mountain reflecting on the waters.
PS as bonus if you want to hike the whole mountain like I did please don't bother paying for permit as no one will be asking as there are no cops on top of the mountain asking for permits. And also for the permits you need a cheque(british for check), dont bother the hassle just enjoy the climb, high five some stonned hippies, they are in their natural habitat. Check the water fall I heard it's epic. I didn't had the time to see that because I was so busy battling my altitude...
Read moreWhat a great visitor center! While small, don’t underestimate the exceptional hospitality and extremely thorough visitor information. While I know the area well and visit Mt Shasta annually (for the past 30+ years!), this trip we wanted our dogs to join the highly acclaimed Mt Shasta BARK Ranger program that is very popular on social media. Allison was super helpful and welcoming. How wonderful to have someone so knowledgeable and passionate about the area to welcome folks and take care of their every travel need. High quality maps! Souvenirs! Gifts! Brochures! A real human to give top-notch advice! It’s so important that Mt Shasta has this welcoming visitor center, especially since Mt Shasta is such an important global destination - and growing in its popularity. I hope this visitor center continues to flourish in serving this special community and its visitors. Thanks, Allison! Our pups will wear their Mt Shasta BARK Ranger tags with pride! We will be back to visit you next...
