Berryvale used to be my go to food oasis in the food dessert that exists between Davis and Ashland. Two years ago when I stopped in, the food was the expected high integrity, health conscious, tasty cooking I expected, but the attitude of the staff was very strange. The cashier stood talking to someone who was a friend, not a customer, for five minutes while I waited at the register, the implied message being âyou disgusting customer, who do you think you are!â It was bad.
Today, on my way home from Eugene, I decided to make Berryvale my food stop despite the questionable employee/s because the food is so good. To my astonishment and great disappointment, the deli had a sign up that said, âno made to order sandwiches until further notice. Please see grab and go section.â All that was in the deli case for purchase was dolmas made with white rice, which didnât look like they had been made on the premises.
The grab and go cooler/fridge had turkey pastrami sandwiches on white bread and sushi made with white rice on styrofoam trays.
The produce section was still very good; local, fresh, organic, ripe and in season. Thatâs the reason they got two stars, not one. But the bread I bought turned out to be stale and they are now carrying grocery items from a less than ethical distributor as evidenced by the presence of Jasonâs Nut Butters - they have palm oil from plantations in Indonesia, plantations that are forcing the orangutan into extinction (palm oil being a completely unnecessary ingredient).
Instead of the spaces out hippie staff that used to run the store, the employees were women with thick foundation, heavy mascara, lots of perfume and neatly trimmed bangs. They did not make anybody wait at the cash register, which I appreciated, but it did give me impression that business is under...

One thing that stands out is the variety. Whether youâre looking for fresh produce, bulk goods, or specialty health products, they seem to have it all. I especially love their deli section â it's perfect for grabbing a healthy bite on the go, and their freshly made soups and sandwiches are always delicious. The staff is also fantastic; theyâre friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful.
If you're into wellness and clean eating, this place is a haven. Itâs small enough to feel personal but well-stocked enough that I never leave without what I need. Berryvale is more than just a grocery store â itâs a staple in the Mt. Shasta community, and itâs always a...
Read moreA lot packed into this store. Great prepared food with a nice window filled room on the south side of the building to enjoy it in. A big selection of delicious smoothies and a full menu of espresso based drinks, but can also sub in yerba mate as that is also freshly brewed daily. The service behind the counter is excellent and the staff is very friendly. The produce is fresh and lush. Good bulk food selection including the normal dry options and a whole host of bulk liquid materials from tamari to agave nectar.A lot packed into this store.
