We saw this at the Myrtle Beach location and while the program itself was pretty good and a great way to be "immersed" into the world of Van Gogh, the local venue production was amateurish and cheapened the experience dramatically.
The main room of the venue, much smaller than expected, has lots of walls with screen material stretched over them and projectors in the ceiling shining down onto the walls. Many of the canvases were not stretched tightly, however, with wrinkles and even rolls easily visible. You could also easily see the crease marks where the screens had been folded and stored. It seems to me the screens could have been steamed or ironed to ease these creases. At least one of the projectors was vibrating, perhaps being mounted too close to an AC vent, and so the projection was jumpy.
The program itself is rather enjoyable. The projections morph their way thematically through Van Gogh's career, moving from flowers to portraits to rural scenes and also self-portraits. Sometimes the projections are still and sometimes animated with layers of moving parts and I enjoyed the mix. The projections seem to start repeating themselves after about 40 minutes, which felt long enough.
Overall I enjoyed the program but was extremely unimpressed by the venue's efforts to host it. The ticket price was about $35 and even under the best circumstances I wouldn't want to pay more...
Read moreDo not waste your money or your time. Our 2 families were excited to finally get a chance to see this immersive experience and we all left disappointed (and one person was even nauseous) due to the shaky images. We were told that the AC must be kept on high to keep the projectors from overheating, but this causes over half of the videos to look shaky both on the floors and the walls. We also noticed that the screens hanging from the middle floor sections was bunched up in places, made even more noticeable since it was moving due to the increased airflow in the room.
We only spent a few minutes inside and informed the employees of the issue who explained there was nothing they could do. I asked for a refund and was told they would contact me back- no one reached out after a week and I was just informed that all tickets are non-refundable.
The space is not suitable for this exhibit- the biography/letters walk-through section is narrow (which makes it hard to navigate and read if anyone else is in there) and the video quality in the immersive area is terrible. My friends who saw this in Raleigh raved about it and I hate that we didn't get the same experience with...
Read moreI went during the week to visit the exhibition. I feel like I expected more from what was advertised on the website and on billboards. The first room with the boards of information was quite interesting but I feel like it would have been better spread between different rooms to feel more immersed in the experience. The second room felt irrelevant with no explanation or meaning and the projection was very dim. The third and last room was very well thought out and I did feel immersed in his paintings. However I feel this is not worth the price we paid. If the second room had more meaning and was better projected and perhaps there was a separate room for starry night and some of his other nature paintings, I feel that I would have rated it higher. There was not even a moment where starry night was shown like any advertised photos, it really was just the photo on the wall and not being immersed in the painting. I don’t think I would go back to this again sadly as it was something I was really looking forward to but I left feeling...
