I was looking forward to this place and even thought about getting a T-shirt until I sat down. Firstly, when I informed the hostess that I was dining alone, she barely batted an eyelid, handed me the menu and “ordered” me to go to the bar. I felt like a kid being punished. In all my solo dining experiences, I have never had anyone “order” me to go sit at the bar. I’m usually informed that there’s no other availability and asked if I would be okay in the bar. She didn’t bother to ask.
Both the sushi bar and the drinks bar were empty, so I asked which one. She told me it didn’t matter. It was a tough decision as I usually find myself at a bar with others, but no one was sitting at either one. So I chose the drinks bar.
The waitress/bartender was nice. I noticed that temaki (hand rolls) was not listed as an option on the menu, so I asked her if it was an option. She told me they only do it for certain rolls, but she asked me which ones I wanted. I said one eel and one salmon. She said they can’t make an eel hand roll, which was odd, because I’ve had it in other establishments. I told her that if it wasn’t possible, a regular roll of each would be fine.
Several minutes later she brought over a plate with four hand rolls (and an additional regular roll I had ordered, which was a California Roll). I was surprised to see four hand rolls, when I had ordered two. When I picked one of them up, I saw that it was a tiny cone with very little rice and very little fish. What they had done was split the order into two smaller hand rolls, instead of combining them into one with more rice. Clearly they don’t know how to do temaki, and that’s probably why they don’t have it on the menu. It was a really poor presentation.
The food tasted good, and the other roll was just fine, but I’ve eaten at other Carolina sushi restaurants that clearly put this one to shame.
I was surprised that no one sat at either bar for the entire time I was there. Makes me think people are going elsewhere for their drinks and sushi, despite the crowds of families sitting at the tables in...
Read moreI've had great experiences in the past at the Carolina Forest location but the Broadway location leaves a lot to be desired. The food was extremely underwhelming. I ordered three separate dishes.
The sushi is priced expectantly for the location; however, the roll was thinly sliced to give off the impression of abundance. Yet, it was well made and had great flavor. The beef tataki is advertised as rare and thinly sliced on a bias as one would expect. The flavor was lacking and it was served as a chopped up steak with half a raw onion piled on the side. It wasn't what I envisioned but it was certainly within the realm of expectation. The worst affront was the chicken cutlet. The image on their website and description is basically a chicken katsu with "homemade breading". Instead I received three frozen Tyson chicken tenders haphazardly chopped up and put on a salad with thickly sliced raw onions.
The advertised descriptions vs the end result was embarrassing for a restaurant of their caliber and prices. Our server, bless her, was prompt and courteous, and when she checked in about the food it was clear she already understood my complaints before I stated them. She even went as far as to go speak to the manager on my behalf. To be honest I usually don't even bother writing reviews but instead of just taking back the untouched food the manager said oh just take 10% off. They did not bother to address it or even come speak to the table; let alone refund the food I didn't even eat.
When you pay the prices of places like King Kong Sushi you expect the highest quality, first and foremost. Without the utmost quality it's better to go to places like Kings Sushi in Surfside or Ichiban in Conway. At least there you can get quality and quantity for a much better price.
Tl;dr Food was poorly made and presented with meager serving sizes. Server was kind and manager doesn't care about customer...
Read moreI don’t think I’ve ever written a review, especially a negative one, but everything about this place is horrible. My friend and I went for a bite after a day at Broadway. I ordered the calamari, a crab roll and a cucumber roll. My friend ordered two different rolls. The calamari came out and was disgustingly chewy. I had one piece and refused to eat anymore. I know it wasn’t the servers fault so I didn’t say anything about it and still paid for it. The entrees came out and by the smell you can tell the sushi was not anywhere near fresh. It was probably sitting out and being used as left overs from a different day being that the restaurant was not busy at all. My friend sent both of her rolls back due to the smell and lack of freshness. I continued to eat about 4 pieces of mine, but I just couldn’t eat anymore. It was absolutely disgusting. The server rudely dropped the check off at the table. We left , still tipped her well being that we know about the serving industry. As we were walking to our cars not even 10 minutes later I felt like I was going to throw up. Not even 20 minutes later I pulled over to the side of the road and threw up 3 times. I had told my other friend we had got sushi and that I had gotten sick and before I even told her where we went she said “King Kong Sushi in Broadway?” And said she had almost the same experience and had gotten sick after eating there. 0/10. If you don’t want to get sick I wouldn’t eat there. We will never be there again and I hope that they do better in the future instead of carelessly serving there customers bad food. Worst place I have ever eaten in Myrtle Beach and I have lived here...
