I want to love Porta Via and will go back but last night we ordered the same meal that 6 months ago was absolutely fabulous and, sadly, it was disappointing. Six months ago the dishes were really understated and not so Americanized; sauces and cheese did not overwhelm the entire dish. The eggplant Parmesan was lightly breaded and delicate. The cannelloni were minimally covered in bechemel and cheese and you could actually taste the wonderful crepes and beef filling. Last night those same dishes were absolutely blanketed in thick mozzarella and the eggplant was like a one-inch thick eggplant steak and did not appear to be breaded or fried. You could not get away from the cheese!! What was all this cheese meant to hide? Remember the old commercials for Ragu marinara where the actor exclaimed “THAT’S Italian!”? Well last night’s entree were the antithesis of that sentiment. Dude. Seriously, enough with the cheese already. Italians do not eat like that. On the other hand the calamari remains absolute perfection, served on a bed of arugula with marinara that is really bright and tangy. And the coffee flavored gelato was wonderful. Our waiter, Ethan, was really the highlight of the entire meal. Personable, funny, attentive and efficient. (BIG shout out to Ethan!!) Yes, I will go back, in joyful hope of the return of Porta...
Read moreI have ordered take out from Porta Via twice, and both times it has been entirely incorrect. I called Tuesday night and placed an order for one cesare salad and a large Porta Via pizza with no mushrooms. When I arrived to pick it up, the boy who rang me up for the order seemed to be in training- there was another guy behind him telling him what buttons to press, that he needed to make sure the pizza had no mushrooms on it, etc. After receiving such detailed instructions from his coworker, I figured there was no way he could possibly grab the wrong food. It is my fault for not checking the items before leaving, but I was in a hurry to get home to my hungry family. The order was $32 and change. Upon getting home, we opened the salad to realize it was not a cesare salad, but instead was a kale salad with bacon and feta. Neither of us like kale, or feta for that matter so it went in the trash. The pizza was not a large but instead an individual size, it did not have mushrooms on it which was correct but was missing pine nuts, which it was supposed to have. So all in all, the three of us shared one individual sized pizza which was very mediocre, and paid $32 for a completely incorrect order. I will NOT be ordering from there or dining there in the future. The level of incompetence is truly embarrassing for them. Get it...
Read moreIv always enjoyed the food here but the last two times I've been here I stood at the door waiting for a hostes to be seated forever. Seems that there's not a hostes, just whoever sees you and decides they want to help you get seated is the operation. I decided to come again tonight by myself craving the lobster ravioli and I walked in right behind couple that was immediately seated and I stood there again watching the girl that seated them go and start making their water glasses. Another girl behind the bar looked up at me and asked could she help and I said yes just one please. So I follower her as she pertains to ask the girl that just seated the couple before me, where to seat me. The girl makes a gesture toward a general area and that's where I was seated. The girl that made the gesture never even looks at me as she continued to walk past me several times cleaning off tables and tending to her guest and I just sat there hungry looking like an idiot thinking that this times gonna be different every time someone walks by me. I couldn't believe it. The irony after having felt the same way before standing at the door waiting to be seated. I eventually got up and left. I'm done. I couldn't go back there now if I wanted to. Shame on me for going this...
