The African Burial Ground National Monument is a profoundly powerful and emotional place that touches the heart and soul of everyone who visits. As you walk through the gates, the weight of history and the significance of the site become immediately apparent. There’s an almost tangible sense of power and reverence that permeates the air, making it clear that this is hallowed ground.

As you begin reading the plaques and the messages inscribed on them, you’re struck by a deep sense of sorrow and reflection. The thought of so many people buried here, many without their names known, is a somber reminder of the injustices they endured. Yet, even in the absence of their names, the presence of those buried here is felt strongly. The silent recognition of their lives, their struggles, and their humanity is an act of remembrance that speaks volumes.

In this space, where the unknown should be remembered, I found myself saying a silent prayer for those who rest here. It’s a place where your heart and mind are naturally drawn to honor and acknowledge the souls who contributed so much to the foundation of this city and this country, yet were forgotten for so long.

The African Burial Ground National Monument is not just a place of sorrow, but also one of respect, remembrance, and deep connection. It’s a place where the unknown are brought into the light, where their lives are honored, and where visitors are given the opportunity to reflect on the history that has shaped us all. This site is a must-visit for anyone seeking to understand the profound impact of African Americans on the history of New York and America, and to pay their respects in a place that is as sacred as it...

Sadly, for myself, at 51yrs old in April of 2014 , I first became aware of this informative information by way of me just happening to be going through a bin in WalMart and came across a dvd marked Black History. The dvd contained several disc and one had Africian Burial: 3pts. As I watched the series being narrated by Ruby Dee, I was enlightened with a knowlege that was trully an awaking. Words are more than can be expressed as well as emotions. I felt proud to watch to documentary of all the deligent people in unity who preserved to made it that which it is today. May God bless them all. I watched the dvd again with my 47yr old brother and with my 89yr old mother. And as I, they were enlighten and moved. I later went to the map on my phone to see that which was shown on the dvd. Because with todays modern techonology, I was actually able to view the picture of the site. In my own humble way, I felt that I was in the moment of the connection to all that I had just became knowlegable of. I close with this..The history of our people will always come to the surface ...always. God will always have it to be so. Always right on time. Right when He says. I extend my utmost gratutude to all who gave of their heart, time, energy. The soilders of The Most High. Rest in Peace to all my Loved Ones who are gone but not ever to be...

The African Burial Ground Memorial in New York City is a powerful and moving tribute to the thousands of Africans who were enslaved and buried in the area during the 17th and 18th centuries. The memorial, located in Lower Manhattan, is a serene and contemplative space that honors the lives and legacies of those who were forced into bondage and suffered unimaginable hardships.

The design of the memorial is striking, with a central sculpture that symbolizes the resilience and strength of the African diaspora. Surrounding the sculpture are engraved markers for the 400 individuals whose remains were unearthed during the construction of a federal building on the site in the 1990s. These markers serve as a poignant reminder of the individuals who were laid to rest in unmarked graves and whose stories have largely been forgotten.

Overall, the African Burial Ground Memorial is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in learning more about the history of slavery in America and honoring the memory of those who suffered under its brutal system. The memorial serves as a somber reminder of the injustices of the past and a call to action for a more just and...
