Coney Island has an Aquarium, huge amusement park like Carnival, and a boardwalk with restaurants. The downside to Coney Island is the price of the rides at the Carnival. It operates on a credit system. Some rides are 5 credits when you look at the price chart that equals $5.00. I think 5 dollars per ride is expensive and that was in the little kiddie Section. The other down side is its filty. I get that is not the beaches fault that the beach goers have never heard of cleaning up behind themselves, but if they see this taking places they should have constant maintenance going around for cleanup. Literally, people left buckets, broken umbrellas, clothes, glass, food, and other random stuff not to mention the tons of trash. This beach needs serious round the clock clean up crew. I was so surprised that I kept thinking why are they not siting people for leaving trash behind. It's totally doable with the amount of police officers lingering around to make them pay a fine. The parking situation is ridiculous... much like it is everywhere in New York. We drove around 2 hours looking for parking because the $27 and $25 dollar pay lots were still full. Nonetheless, the positives are there is a nice playground on the beach. A palm tree that sprays water for the kiddies to run around in. There are rinse off showers along with feet hoses to rinse your feet off which is a major plus. The boardwalk is lined in stores and restaurants. Definitely somewhere you could go to sit and look at the lights of the fair and still enjoy the...
Read moreHistorical importance.. very wide boardwalk and beach both… 2nd longest boardwalk in world..
It is 2nd longest boardwalk in world lead by Atlantic city boardwalk. it’s just block away from Coney island rail station which goes by the name of Stillwell Avenue. ( Just FYI for fellow readers – if you take Q subway from 34th Penn station or 42 times sq station, it will reach directly to Stillwell Avenue.) following Nathan’s famous, its just 2 min walk from the station. This beach and boardwalk are most famous for its amusement park. They have some country old amusement park. For kids, they would love this for sure. NY aquarium is also along with the boardwalk. Beach shop and restaurants are also there on the boardwalk. Restrooms are quite frequent on the boardwalk. I went there in April ending and boardwalk shops were open. Beach was clean and calm coz it was closed for bathing and swimming. I am sure it would be crowded in summer time. For evening walk, this is the perfect place for Brooklyn folks. If you really wanna come here then come in the month of June when Mermaid parade happens. It is a lineup with cosplay of mermaid costume. So colorful vibrant and full of music
I won’t recommend it if you are in NYC for 3-4 days. NYC has to offer a lot more things than this. If you are not coming here then I guess you are not missing anything great unless you are not Nathan’s hotdog fan then...
Read moreConey Island can be underrated sometimes, and it's mostly because of the crowds, and if we're being honest, the surrounding neighborhood isn't as well "developed" [read gentrified] as other parts of Brooklyn. Which might add to the rumor milling as well. Most well to do families or transplants might favor the Long Island beaches, or even the Jersey Shore time permitting.
But there's something to be said about Coney Island in that it uniquely feels like a city beach, and I love that - kind of like South Beach in Miami. They are the kind of places you can waddle out of the water, and find some local eateries just across the street, or just hop back on the subway and be anywhere else in half an hour. On top of which it has amusement park!!! I personally may never ride those rides but when your closest other options at this scale are in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, this is a no-brainer for a regular...
