This park represents the worst “design by committee” aesthetics I’ve ever seen and is easily the most dangerous playground in NYC. Someone’s kid is going to get hurt here...
There are no lines of sight. If your kid is anywhere but 5ft in front of you won’t be able to see them. The entire park is a visual obstruction.
Steep drops everywhere. The main area of this park is essentially a very steep foam hill with unevenly spaced, steep stone stairs leading up the sides. My 3yo couldn’t make the climb up the hill or stairs and my 5yo nearly slipped and fell down the hill several times. I can’t imagine this place after a rain or in the winter (yes real New Yorkers take their kids to the playground in the winter).
The main jungle gym (eel / snake) structure is mostly enclosed. So again you lose sight of your children. One of the reasons for line of sight is diffusing arguments over toys, turns, etc... The inside of this eel thing is essentially thunderdome.
There is very little seating for parents and even less of it is shaded.
The old park was a fine design and seemed to be in descent condition. Why the parks dept. wasted 3.4 million dollars of taxpayers money and closed a high traffic playground for a whole year is beyond me. I see multiple injury lawsuits stemming from this place in the future. Seriously, keep your...
Read moreIt seems to me that the committee involved in the Chelsea Water Park renovation didn't consider the safety of children who would come to play. For one, the slide is beyond dangerous. I haven't been back since last summer and I just remembered why. My 8 year old son hurt his back going down that almost 3 story slide. The hill near the step stones is by far the most horrible idea ever. Any child going down the hill can lose control/ balance and crack their heads open on the side steps. Not to mention it's so steep it's hard to slow down when walking it. The park isn't an open concept park like the previous park which we absolutely miss making it harder to keep track of our kids. So much money invested in a park that isn't functional and down right dangerous. Why isn't this place kid friendly or safe is beyond me. How many accidents have to occur before someone decides to renovate the already renovated water park. Parents, you have been warned! Be careful!
Two stars because it is beautiful and well kept but it's a park, not a gallery or...
Read moreSince the renovation, this park / playground has some very cool and fun areas. It's also clean and well maintained. Feels like it's really out of the city because there are no cars in sight, lots of trees and two sports fields + a skate park. Very impressive.
My 7yrold niece had a great time. The spongey floor and the main sand area section are excellent and safe for scratches and bruises. Seems like fun things to play on. The main slide made her uneasy.
The slide is a bit too big and fast, at least for under 8 yrs old. They put padding up on the concrete wall that you're launched pretty close to. I saw some falls and minor accidents. So I suggest watch for a bit before you let your kids on it.
Pretty decent amount of places to sit, relax and watch. Tho it could use a few more benches. Not many cons at all. Really well done playground! A few more benches and safety adjustments for all ages and it's 5 star! I'll definitely...
