I promised Paul I would write a review of his work, and I am happy to keep that promise, because Paul is definitely a professional.
I turned to Paul for help with a quick registration of a car I had just bought. He promised to have my permanent plates done in a day and set up an appointment. I arrived at his office in Queens on the appointed date. The blinds covering the usually glass office doors were up, but the office door was closed. There was a sheet hanging on the door with a message - "Gone to lunch, will be back soon." I called Paul, he didn't pick up, but called back a minute later - confirming that he would be home from lunch soon.
Indeed, he showed up soon, didn't show up alone - he had his wife/girlfriend/sister/partner and a man, as it turned out, a customer with him.
I waited until Paul had dealt with the previous client. The office looked like it was actively working - on Paul's desk there was an abundance of office equipment - a large monitor, a laptop and a terminal for accepting cards. There were also car plates and registration papers prepared for someone. There was no doubt that Paul's business was going well - his small office was popular. Paul took a long, hard time to find me a good insurance policy - it was obvious that some serious work was going on. His sweet friend was watching cute dog commercials on the big screen the whole time and kept saying, "He'll give you great insurance! Very good insurance." And, indeed, Paul's look was such that he seemed to have no other agenda than to find me the best insurance possible. When Paul finished his research, the insurance was suddenly $800 a month (and he asked for another $500 as some sort of downpayment for his services).
However, insurance was the least of my worries; I expected to get permanent plates in a day, just as Paul had promised. He promised to give them to me the next day at one o'clock. He said there was no need to call in advance - at one o'clock in the afternoon the plates would be on his desk. In the meantime, a friend of his came to see him, and he also set an appointment to visit him the next day at one o'clock. By the end of our "meeting", I realized that most likely I would not get the number the next day at 1 o'clock - I was too insistently persuaded otherwise. The office, the girlfriend, Paul, the client who came in front of me, the guy who had the 1:00 appointment - all of these were obviously part of a small but well-thought-out play that had one goal - to convince me that I would get my plates tomorrow at 1:00 sharp. Apparently, there was supposed to be another participant in the performance - a happy customer who came to get the plates that were on Paul's desk, but for some reason he did not show up. For the plates, by the way, I paid a total of $700 in advance (counting with "down payment" insurance).
The next day, at precisely 1p.m., I drove up to the office. The office was closed with the blinds down. It was a complete feeling that it wasn't open today. I called Paul, who expectedly didn't answer the phone. Waited for him calling back, but unfortunately he didn’t.
Thus, my worst fears were confirmed - I paid $700 for a small theatrical performance. However, when you consider that a ticket costs at least $100 on Broadway, the price for a ticket to a play played for a single audience does not seem excessive.
However, if I had only given the money - I gave Paul the car papers, without which I couldn't get the license plates. So, I had to use plan B, which I had prepared for the occasion. I drove up to the police station and texted from there to Paul, that if Paul didn't give me my money and papers back, I was going to the police and opening a case. Gave Paul half an hour. By an amazing coincidence, by the end of that half hour Paul called and said he had the plates in his hands and was on his way to his office with them. In an hour he could give them to me. In an hour I really got the plates and promised Paul to leave a good review, which...
Read moreI went to Pauls DMV in November. It's February and I still have not received my registration or plates. The business is also never open, so trying to get ahold of anyone is hard. I call everyday and no one answers. I am a young college student who basically has gotten scammed of my money and documents. The very few times I do get ahold of Paul, I ask when my plates and registration will be ready, to which he replies "Next week.". Paul has never contacted me regarding any update on my registration in the past months. Also, when I ask to retrieve my documents, it is stated that I cannot get them back because the information regarding the car has already been processed. That is total BS. Paul or anyone at this establishment has never input my information into the DMV system. Also, when contacting the actual DMV, they reiterate to me the fact that none of my information has ever been processed. Thus, Paul has left me with no other option than to contact the authorities and submit a police report. Due to the speculation that this can be identity theft, fraud or stolen property as Paul and his establishment obtain concrete information regarding my identity and addresses. It is very unfortunate that anyone should have to take this route. The simple transaction of handing back documents or putting them into the DMV system could have made this so much easier. Hopefully, this does not escalate any further to which then I would be forced to take legal action. In November when I had first came to this business I had planned to leave a good review for Paul in the coming weeks that my vehicle information would arrive. But, months later, here I am still document-less...
