Initially, I gave this store 5 stars because it is beautiful, located in a basement, and has a warm vibe. It is definitely a hidden gem, though they could use more business. However, I hope they adjust their customer service before they get more customers. Unfortunately, I had an unpleasant experience at Uncle Funky's, and I am writing this review to share it.
On Monday, I purchased a used set of trucks and wheels for $88 from the store owner, who had set them up for warp testing. When I got home, I realized that the wheels were not offset and were incompatible with my Loaded Icarus board. Additionally, the bearings were broken. The following day, I attempted to return or exchange the items, but the owner refused, saying that he no longer sells those products. Despite most skate shops accepting returns or exchanges, he was unwilling to accommodate my request. He was also condescending and rude when I inquired about the store's return policy, and other customers in the store observed his behavior towards me. Interestingly, he was friendly and apologetic towards the other customers, but not towards me.
Despite his disrespectful behavior, I attempted to make another purchase. I asked about the price of the Orangatang Heats, and he quoted me $62. I agreed to the price and attempted to pay through my Cash App. After installing the wheels, he demanded $67.80 instead of the agreed-upon $62 and threatened to charge me for labor if I refused to pay the increased price. I was disgusted by his unprofessionalism and ultimately asked him to remove the wheels from my board.
Overall, I am extremely disappointed with the service and treatment I received at this store. I would not recommend Uncle Funky's to anyone and suggest they take their business elsewhere. Uncle Funky sold me used damaged goods and treated me poorly when I tried to resolve the issue. I’m not a monkey, uncle funky. But you thought so. I’d still give my first visit 5...
Read moreI had called earlier in the week to get an estimate on trade in value of a board. They quoted me between $80-$100 for what I had, to be fair to them they said they couldn't confirm it unless I emailed them pictures.
Anyway I emailed them and waited for 2 days to no response. Drove to Manhattan today to show them the board in person and they said it was in perfect condition and could do $50 on it. Brand new it's over $300 and they said it's in near perfect condition so to me that's a huge red flag already.
I can see why the place is so highly rated. It was very clean inside.
However, idk if it was that they were short staffed today or the owner wasn't there but I wasn't seeing that customer service all the other reviewers are talking about. I felt very awkward in the store, it felt like the cashier just wanted us to leave.
I feel I had wasted a lot of time trying to give a local skate shop business. I really wanted to give them money, specifically to support small local business.
Idk y'all I'm sorry but after this experience it seemed just as boring and corporate as walking into a GameStop and getting beaten over the head at 30 cents a game.
I didn't feel that family vibe or the vibe of passionate people working on something they love. I can get all my stuff sorted online at half the price. I was looking for an experience. I...
Read moreAs soon as I walked in the door, I knew this place was amazing. Jeff introduced himself and pointed me to the free stuff immediately and let me know he was there to answer any questions (even though he was clearly busy). They have a huge selection and wide variety of brands and styles. I've received great customer service whether I buy anything or not, including on the phone. I'm learning about the equipment I stand (or sit, due to disability) on, no matter where I got it. Everyone is treated with respect and courtesy and I'm sure the other people in the store feel the same way I do there - like the world revolves around them with some minor interruptions. I'm impressed with the community involvement I've seen and the positive environment maintained inside the store and encouraged within the community as well. Jeff and Uncle Funkys are involved in a lot of great programs that range from sponsoring events to helping people in need. This has become my shop of choice. It's a great place run by a truly...
