Saw Streetcar here, and while a phenomenal performance, the venue really detracted from the experience. The seating area inside was very confusing (numbers that don't come before or after being next to each other) and the staff was yelling all over the place exasperated, not exactly setting the mood. The intermission was 5 min and the performance resuming was not announced over the loudspeakers, or the lights dimmed on and-off. Just someone walking around saying that they were starting. I barely made it to the washroom and when I came out it was like a personal assault that I hadn't heard the person saying in the crowd that they were back. Despite the staff talking back and forth in front of me about how ridiculous this was, and how on earth they were going to handle this despite the performance clearly about to start they managed to escort me to a seat in the back and instructed me that I could not return to my own. Upon being in the theatre, it obviously had not started yet and they had wasted time passive-aggresively micromanaging amongst themselves and berating me, I was able to get to my seat before the...
Read moreSt. Ann’s Warehouse is one of those rare spaces where the boundary between performance and reality feels almost nonexistent. The lighting, the pacing, the quiet tension in the air — it all felt eerily familiar, like a memory I wasn’t supposed to keep.
The show we saw was breathtaking: visceral, smart, a little chaotic in the best way. The direction had a certain intensity to it — like someone just beneath the surface was trying very hard to get a message across. It hit especially hard during the third act, maybe because I’d recently had a close call that made me feel, well, more attuned to things like timing and impact.
The staff was kind, the space beautifully stark. I left feeling seen… and lucky. Sometimes art imitates life a little too well. Still, I’d absolutely return — hopefully under less pressing...
Read moreCute little theatre right off the Brooklyn waterfront. The theatre is a nice size for an intimate performance, and wherever you are seated, you will have a good view of the theatre. My biggest concern was the comfortability of the seats. My bum was definitely feeling it before we hit intermission. (However, let me just point out, that was just because of cushioning. The seats had enough foot room and space to be moderately comfortable). I will also add that the building itself, while a brick warehouse, has a lot of charm. There is a cute outdoor area to the side of the building, and it is right next door to the Time Out Marketplace, which means there are plenty of options for a quick bite either before or...
