Looking forward to the reopening of the Studio Museum in Harlem. Designed by Sir David Adjaye (born 1966), the exterior reminded me of Bangkok's Robot Building. Just the eyes are missing... In its dark coloring it looks slightly sinister, similar to Adjaye's 130 William Condominium in Lower Manhattan.

The Studio Museum in Harlem generally offers a fascinating multiplex perspective on African and African American life for those who are open to it. We didn't get to see much, as the exhibits are being packed for moving out of the building, which is going to be torn down; a new, gorgeous building is planned, and we look forward to seeing it in the future! For people considering visiting this museum, check the website for information, as exhibits will be available in nearby locations beginning in May 2018. The museum store alone is well worth a visit! It and the small amount we were able to see let us know this is a fabulous museum to which we will plan another visit.

As for the perspective that the museum is located in "a dangerous neighborhood" shared by one reviewer; I disagree. That comment is incorrect, and, frankly, it sounds racist. We walked all over that neighborhood completely safely, going first to the museum, then to Best Market Harlem, and then to Lee Lee's Bakery. We were never bothered--and I'll bet that other reviewer was never bothered, either. My husband and I were struck by how alive Harlem feels--a wonderful energy and spirit permeates the entire area. Go with an open mind--you...

March 2016... the space is great. Place nice and also clean. Workers present that day were very nice . guy at desk took time to talk with us about some history and also about the artists.. suggested price except Sundays (free) is $7 but u can give whatever you have. I'm not really artsy so maybe i don't understand some of the pieces!? Maybe i was supposed to think deeper but I was 2 tired to think. I hear the art changes so everytime u go maybe something different.

This is a pure review from my drafts folder written after that visit (not sure how Ive never checked that folder:( . I had to give them their props no matter how long ago!!

Update 2022 I see they're listed temporarily closed I wonder if Covid affects.. Anyway I...

Ever since I was a lil dude I've loved this place. It is THE staple of Harlem, the home of African-American creative visual culture. Sure, art galleries are popping up left and right in Harlem now, but The Studio Museum was here first and it'll be here when these johnny-come-lately places all start to die off. Far from pretentious, it's a place where the history of Harlem hangs out, from Romare Bearden to the artist that you don't even know about who is changing perceptions with their creative strokes, this is THE place. Just like ya boy Pumkin Escobar, it's in Harlem. Come here, getchu some culture. You'll be...
