Gallery Sonder — Attraction in Newport Beach

Yesterday I visited Gallery Sonder with a friend to view the Anthony James exhibition of Polydedrons. What I expected to be a quick visit turned into a much longer one with the Gallery owner, Joshua Macdonald, enthralling us with details of the artist’s, Anthony James, works and his inspiration. Anthony James' Polyhedron pieces are geometric sculptures made with steel, glass, and LED lights. They have a cool, futuristic look, and I felt like I was gazing into infinity, as the lit mirrored reflections truly seem endless. The way light interacts with them gives them a life-like quality, as if they’re breathing and constantly shifting depending on where you stand. Additionally, the gallery had on display Anthony’s Rain Paintings and I was immediately drawn in by how realistic the rain was. It felt like I could reach out and touch the rain or wipe it away. The simplicity of the image was deceptive, though – while it appeared straightforward, I could recognize how complex and difficult it must be to create. The way paint and light came together to capture such a realistic, moving effect made me appreciate Anthony James’ skill and thought behind it even more. Gallery Sonder is an amazing new addition to the Corona Del Mar community. The gallery feels like a breath of fresh air for the town and I am excited to see the new art that will emerge throughout the year. What made my experience so great and sets the gallery apart is the warm and inviting atmosphere created by the owner, Josh! He is incredibly knowledgeable and genuinely welcoming, whether you are a passerby just browsing, or seriously considering making a purchase. Gallery Sonder is such a great spot in Corona Del Mar/Newport Beach! The variety of art on display is incredible—there’s something for everyone, and the way the space is set up really lets each piece shine.

Josh, the owner, is awesome. He’s super friendly and knows so much about the artists and their work. Whether you’re just stopping in to look around or thinking about buying, he makes you feel right at home.
