On my trip to Florida (March 2015) I did a day trip kayaking the Wekiva River with Adventures in Florida (AIF) and I cannot recommend it more. Every step of the process was fantastic!
After booking a trip on one river, Greg (from AIF) emailed me with a note that the river I had booked had a pretty low water level, and offered me the option of switching to a different location which is spring fed (and has higher water.) Having picked the location randomly, I definitely appreciated the guidance and went with his recommendation.
Our tour guide was Dave, and he was great. He was knowledgeable about the different kinds of birds and was friendly and fun for everyone there. (Our group had 9 people ranging from a child of around 4 years old who kayaked on her Mom's lap, a few teenagers and a few adults. He interacted really well with the whole group.) Note that with a group of 4 or more people, the website advertises that you can schedule a private trip if you prefer.
The kayaking was supposed to be done at around 2 PM, but we were having a great time and Dave had us go down all sorts of side channels, so we were out there until past 3. The Wekiva flows in to the St. John's River which is more public (so no alligators) and we stopped to swing from a rope swing into the water.
The entire trip was incredibly beautiful. We saw all kinds of birds along with a few alligators which was really cool. We didn't see any manatees in the water or bears on the sides, although those are found in the area.
Things to bring with you: Camera in a waterproof (sealed) bag - You definitely will want to take pictures, and you don't want to ruin your camera/phone. A waterproof bag with a cord that you can wear around your neck is perfect.
Sandals - I forgot these and ended up going barefooted. In the boats this was fine, but when we stopped for lunch, sandals would have been nice.
I definitely hope to take future trips with Adventures in Florida and recommend...
Read moreWe met at the river launch and got underway shortly. Jimmy, our guide, was friendly, knowledgeable and exuded experience for you are venturing into a territory where you are not the apex predator. Equipment was well suited to the trip, complete and in good repair. We had a sit-on-top tandem kayak. I have a sit in tandem and prefer sit in kayaks but this wasnt bad.
He customized the route for the size group so each one is different. This is good for the most part. It was supposed to be a 8 mile downriver with the current but because the group was very small it transformed into an out and back so you were paddling against the current during the second half. Dont let a few mile per hour current lull you into complacency, it was work coming back and I was glad to be done. My arms will be sore tomorrow!.
Jimmy was quick to point out all kinds of wildlife. We saw two gators close up at less than 20ft away. One a 5-6ft and another a 8-9 footer. That was exciting. I do have 3 kayaks of my own but I have never encountered alligators up close and personal like this. Honestly I was a little apprehensive before the trip I have to admit but once I got out there, not a problem.
The day was partly cloudy and we got a 9am start, both helped to avoid the heat of the day and we were done by 1-130pm. Lunch provided was good and plentiful and a change of pace from the sandwich norm.
We picked this outfit because of the REVIEWS. I was a 75 min drive (60Miles) from our timeshare but that did not deter us. I will go by reviews anytime. If I go again I will definitely go with this outfit again to another river and will...
Read moreCalling all yogis! Do you have sense of adventure? I have an unforgettable experience for you! This week I gathered my closest pals and my favorite yoga instructor, Gina Rose Ryt who also leads tours with Adventures in Florida for a kayak, yoga and bioluminescence experience. We docked promptly at the start time and for those of us that were beginners we were given an easy to follow tutorial on how to maneuver the kayak and what to expect on the tour. She also gave us a few minutes to comfortable with the kayak before setting on our adventure to admire the beauty and sparkle of the bioluminescence. We paddled out to a small island where we were led by Gina, in some meaningful full and easy to follow poses using the oar. We docked onto the island for some more stretching and small meditation. There are no words to describe the beauty and serenity of the practice. We spent some time in the island afterwards following the yoga portion of the tour to socialize and enjoy the moments together. We were celebrating a birthday and this gave us a chance to sing our well wishes and take pics (strongly recommend a waterproof case or a ziplock). We set off again into the water under the night sky. Gina was very knowledgeable about the bioluminescence and had many tips and tricks for us on how to play with the bioluminescence so we could get the FULL experience. It was a night none of us will ever forget. I strongly recommend to dock prior to sunset to get the most of...
