A cute little Norman chateau style castle that was built in 1924 by author, James Oliver Curwood. This hidden gem is located in downtown Owosso next to the Shiawassee River. It doesn’t take long to go through the museum. You can go at your own pace without a tour guide. As a matter of fact, we had the whole place to ourselves. At the time of his death (age 49), Curwood was the highest paid author in the world. Curwood was a conservationist and wrote about the Great Northwest and many of his lead characters were animals. Several of his books were adapted into films such as “The Grizzly King” that was made into the movie, “The Bear”. John Wayne also starred in one of the movies called, “The Trail Beyond” adapted from the book, “The Wolf Hunters”. There is such rich history to be found in this yellow castle in...

Beautifully restored and maintained writing studio built by James Oliver Curwood. Being in Curwood Castle took us back to experience an original "pre-digital" environment. He created his content on an early 1900's typewriter, and his writing desk is on display. This author was a leader in the "pulp era" of fiction writing when he created some of most captivating "page turner" novels of the early 20th century. Also, Curwood's leadership in the movie industry beginning in 1910 is detailed in an exhibition in the lower level of the castle. Curwood made over 200 movies to go along with his 33 novels. The castle is well worth a day trip to Owosso. Also, the downtown area (which is a couple of blocks away from the castle) has some unique shops and...

Finally got to visit Curwood Castle. It was a little smaller than I had imagined but was happy to see it in such great condition. The attendant was knowledgeable and is happy to answer any questions about the property. There are displays of Curwoods books and a screen with one of his movies playing in the basement. Climb the stairs in the tower to see additional displays and a nice view of the property and the river below.

There is also a log cabin to visit. We crossed the river using the footpath and stone tower bridge to visit a nearby icecream shop. Also along the path are an art gallery with sculptures and flowerbeds and another historical...

This was a really cool place. I had never heard of Mr. Curwood or his story's previous to visiting his castle. Was looking for something to do around our area and decided to check this out, man was I happy. There is not a ton to see in the castle but what you do see is filled with information on this guy's life and the numerous books he wrote that influenced over 200 movies. Make sure you walk around the grounds and take the short walk to see where he actually lived as well. The art museum nextdoor is also worth a visit.
