The store offers a great selection of products ranging from TCGs, board games, to tabletop warhammer with a range of miniatures and necessary craft supplies to paint. They run events for multiple communities on a frequent and consistent basis. While attending events, there are a handful of snacks and drinks you can buy that are dirt cheap, no upcharge to be seen. Big plus there.
However, while the staff are courteous, I would not say they are hospitable, and neither is the community. Without question, the MTG x FF release has been rough product-availability-wise, and I believe the store is feeling it. Every time I would approach to ask about product availability or expected shipments, it was met with very direct and curt responses that gave off a vibe of annoyance or general lack of personal empathy or care. It was very, "this is the situation, and that's just that." This would have been okay had it not been compounded by the following.
I had called before the prerelease to confirm product would be available for purchase at the event. I was diligent in my questions and made sure to be crystal clear. I showed up to the pre-release just before it started, and every single booster box and collector box were sold out. When asked about the estimated restock date, I was met with the same type of answers as provided earlier in this review. Lackluster. I then found out just this last week, while attending a draft event, that the owner was selling collector boxes to his friends for just slightly over MSRP. You don't get your hands on MSRP without being a store that was specifically sent products to sell.
Additionally, MTG x FF has a mini-event called Chocobo racing. Where you attend events, and your attendance gets tracked, you win prizes based on how often you attend. The store's staff did not take this seriously, as they provided no communication on it, and were not using the provided promo tools to track attendance for all to see. When I spoke with one of their staff, a lady who was playing in the draft with me, she said, "Normally we just give those out to those who spend the most or attend, we're not really sure what we'll do with them."
Staff remarks aside, this is not a new-player-friendly space. The frequent patrons/attendees to events play commander exclusively, and stick in tight-knit groups. They do not socialize outside of these groups, and even if you, being at a table alone for 30minutes waiting to play, have an entire group of 6 sit right next to you and start up games, they will not acknowledge you, interact with you, or play with you. If you do happen to engage with someone and do not have a commander deck, they'll tell you they only play commander and leave to go socialize with their group. People drop thousands to just have colored cardboard they can play with others, and to be faced with a community that plays exclusively a single format, out of the multitude of options, is absurd and exclusionist.
While the store is not liable for its community, there are things they could do to help. 1: Get some cardboard, create some table signs like "looking for player," "playing standard," "playing commander," "new to game," "looking for mentor," provide some tools to help new people, and make it more of an inclusive space for all game types. 2: Run non-commander events. 3: Run a new to MTG night where players can meet community veterans, learn the game, and get welcomed into a larger group, to stop these groups from essentially driving off new people.
All this said, I will not be returning to this store, but wish it the best. The staff need hospitality training. The experience needs a little reworking, and the men's bathroom needs a deep cleaning because it's filthy and reeks of urine. Replace the toilet seat as well; it's...
Read moreSLG has always been a great experience, but its just been getting better! I had recently got a console from them, and after a while I started having a problem with it. I called them explaining what was happening, and they were more than willing to help and try to fix the problem asap. To make a long story short they didn't have another console of the one I bought, but they got me a newer console and even took a bit off to help! Their customer service was top notch from everyone I had talked to, and they show that they care for their customers and want to make sure they're fully satisfied with their purchases. I'm terrible with names but to the 2 employees I had talked to on the phones and the 2 I dealt with in store were super awesome and I appreciate what they did for me and all of their help! Their video game selection is pretty good and the prices can some times be lower than the normal market price. If you haven't checked them out yet, the atmosphere is very laid back and welcoming to all ages. They always seem to be having some kind of meet up for card games, a D&D section, and have a decent selection for board games as well as cards. Definitely stop by and...
Read moreIt’s a very nice store for gaming lovers from console to cards. My two boys (8 & 6) wanted to get Pokémon cards. My 8 year old has been collecting for 4 years, my 6 year old has for 2 years. So they have a true passion in Pokémon. Adults have been over buying cards lately and leaving none for kids. Every single store like Think Geek, Game Stop and small stores have put kids priority for Pokémon cards. The guy behind the counter was rude; short and annoyed. we got a box of four booster packs. My 6 year old made the comment, “we get two!” Referring to them splitting the packs inside the box. He snapped back at my kid with “only one Pokémon per transaction” like my kid understood: he was just excited. Get some customer service skills. Kids can have a passion in gaming just as much as adults. If you’re not a kid, go there. But if you have kids, prepare to be treated...
