Cornet Custard is a great addition to Portland’s already standout ice cream scene. The custard base is rich and creamy, but not over the top with decadence. You can tell with a sample that you are in for a treat.
The shop is cute, the vinyl setup for music is fun, and the location is stellar. My only concern is that the way this place is setup - one person scooping and one person waiting at the cash register, is that this place will have unnecessarily long wait times once the word gets out. I also don’t love the 8:30pm close time, seems like it is a shot in the foot for a dessert spot to be closed by the time dinner is over during the summer.
The cones are not good. They need to switch those out soon. Whatever brand they chose seemed to be “for the aesthetic” only, because it was an objectively cardboard-like cone; dense and flavorless. Did not pair well with such a fantastic handmade frozen custard.
Lastly, the price is not for the faint of heart. I get it, these are not cheap ingredients and it’s evident that a lot of labor and love goes into this product, but $17 for a pint?! I was excited to try the product, and I didn’t even think it was overpriced as I was there, but I can’t, in good conscience, not mention this in my review. I understand that it needs to be sustainable for the business, but the price should also be sustainable for the customer.
All that suffices to say, I would definitely come back here. Great product that is made...
Read moreIncredible icecream, unique flavors. I've been craving something custard based for so long-- this hit the spot. I had the devil's cake chocolate and the caramel. Divine. I also sampled the passion fruit- out of this world. No words. Flawless, smooth, flavorful, creamy. The best. Those cones are amazing as well. They taste very European, I heard they are from Rome! So good. Mmmm. I am just waiting to go back.
What left me the most impressed was the owner. Immediately, I knew when I walked in she owned the place. She had a sunny disposition and was extremely professional yet so warm and kind. A regular customer walked in and I saw her walk up to this customer and cordially give this woman a hug. They exchanged some words of encouragement t and the encounter left me stunned as I thought to myself, "Good humans still exist." Her love for her customers shines. To add a cherry on top, I had found some quince fruit in the neighborhood and this angel (the owner) gave me a bag to carry them home while I enjoy my icecream cone in the other hand. She is sweetening the community with heart that shines so bright. Congratulations on creating the best icecream I have ever had, while also serving the community with your whole heart. You make a difference and that's not something every business does. Thank you for the fantastic icecream and...
Read moreFrom a Wisconsinsite who worked at Kopp's Frozen Custard in Milwaukee, this is NOT at all like frozen custard from back home. The texture/mouth feel of this product is not as creamy, soft and rich as the midwestern custards. This product was much closer to regular ice cream.
The flavors here are good, and there's quite a selection of interesting varieties, but it seems that to make this happen they have to make a bunch of different batches and then they freeze it in containers which they eventually serve out of. This was served quite a bit colder/more frozen than the custard that is served fresh from the machines in mid-western custard joints (Kopps, Culvers, Kiltie, Oscars, etc). And as a result typically there they serve only 3 favors: vanilla, chocolate, and whatever the flavor-of-the-day is (yes, it changes every single day)
$8 seems a bit high-priced for a 1 scoop cone/dish - difficult for an average high-school kiddo to bring a date or a family to come.
It's not bad, just not what we expected having grown up with custard from...
