River City Christian isn't perfect, no church is; however, it is a place where imperfect people can find a home. If you're looking for a place that will help you get connected to God and to each other, you might check out our church.
Yes, the Sunday morning worship team is talented and brings us into the right mindset for worship. Yes, the preaching is biblically-based and dynamic, but it also tugs at the heart with the personal applications that often bring me to my knees. You won't be spoon fed, here. This certainly ain't church lite! And the pastors don't shy away from the tough issues of our faith.
The pastors and staff are genuine, caring, and accessible. As is the case in large churches, they will get to know you and you will get to know them beyond a friendly smile if you get involved. And there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and serve.
The intergenerational "growth groups" meet in many neighborhoods throughout Sac and the foothills. Plus, men's and women's groups are quite active. We even do an all-church camp-out! Oh, I shouldn't forget to mention a fantastic Celebrate Recovery ministry. Plenty of chances to get to know each other (if you do your share of reaching out), while studying God's word. Plus, I love hanging out with such a multi-cultural mix of people.
If you've got littles, we've got an on-site pre-school. Your kids will love our children's ministry and the grades 4 and 5 programs. Wait 'til they attend our Summer Blast! or Harvest Carnival. The middle school and high school pastors and their volunteer staffs are top notch. And the college/young professionals group is quite active. The latter two groups just got back from building houses in Mexico.
I personally am involved in three service opportunities (you will dig in and find your own areas to discover and practice your gifts).
For the last 10 years, I've been so blessed to volunteer prepping and serving for our annual Christmas Mall--a ministry in which needy families, carefully vetted by partner elementary schools and social agencies, come to our church to shop our "mall," with decorated stores overflowing with Christmas gifts. Each person, including babies, is given a voucher to purchase gifts of their own choosing and have them gift-wrapped for Jesus' birthday. The dignity of choice. Wow. When you get to see a child "buy" a Christmas present for her mom or dad for the first time, it's really something.
I get to help picking up two busloads of kids and parents from one of our partner schools to take to the Christmas Mall. Many parents are Spanish-speakers and I get to share my gift of speaking Spanish.
As a recently retired teacher, I love helping serve treats to the teachers at that same partner school for Teacher Appreciation Week, etc. I've also helped run carnival games at the school Open House, and just this last week I was able to use my music gifts to provide background music at a school BBQ. So fun! Who said serving Jesus had to be a boring slog?
I've also appreciated our church outreach to Muslims in our community. I've been able to teach refugee parents how to communicate with and get help from teachers, how to help their children with homework, etc. I also recently helped serve an iftar meal (that which breaks the Ramadan fast) at a local mosque with quite a few church friends. Sitting at a table, discussing their views and mine about Jesus in a friendly context with great food was eye-opening, stimulating, and a real chance to witness.
None of the three areas of service I've highlighted may be your passions, but the point is that River City Christian will provide the opportunities to worship, fellowship, and serve. It's not a perfect church, but...
Read moreUpdate: My sister, Aurora, and brother-in-law, John, were visiting us (from Last Vegas, NV) after my son, Daniel, got married, Sat. 09/06/2025. I believe they enjoyed the Sunday service and wonderful hymns, 09/07/2025. I enjoyed the sense of community. I bought my T-shirt and ordered a black River City Christian Church hoodie, too.
Older post: I enjoyed the Christian music, met a newby, Mary, who sat next to my husband, Greg, and I which was our first time, 06/29/2025, in attendance. We each were handed a Compass Magazine which had some good articles in it. I texted the number as the bulletin board stated and received a small parting gift box with goodies. I hope my husband loved it as much as I did so we can return. Pastor, Jesse Smith was funny at times as he went over the Book of Proverbs. It's a very nice, welcoming and...
