We stopped by the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial on a Sunday morning—no crowds, just the powerful bronze figures surrounding a granite block that quietly tells a pivotal story. Among those honored are Barbara Johns (the 16-year-old whose student strike helped launch Brown v. Board of Education), attorneys Oliver Hill and Spottswood Robinson, and Rev. L. Francis Griffin. The monument bears poignant quotes like ‘It seemed like reaching for the moon’ and ‘The legal system can force open doors… but it cannot build bridges.’ A moving, essential stop on Capitol Square that adds depth and meaning to nearby historical sites. Designed by sculptor Stanley Bleifeld, this “living memorial” was unveiled on July 21, 2008, following private funding of about $2.8 million.
