We visited the Virginia Washington Monument on a tranquil Sunday morning—though no formal ceremonies were happening, the striking equestrian statue of George Washington alone makes it profoundly worth the stop. Flanked by statues of fellow Revolutionary Virginians—Jefferson, Patrick Henry, Andrew Lewis, George Mason, John Marshall, and Thomas Nelson Jr.—and framed by allegorical figures symbolizing virtues like Independence and Justice, it’s a powerful tribute to the state’s legacy. Anchored on the axis of Grace Street, this grand monument beautifully complements nearby historical sites like the Capitol and Governor’s Mansion. It was conceived after a design competition in 1849, sculptor Thomas Crawford began the work but passed away in 1857. The partially completed monument was unveiled—amid great fanfare—on Washington’s birthday, February 22, 1858. Randolph Rogers later completed the remaining figures, and the full monument was...

If you are visiting the Capital Grounds this is definitely a monument you will want to stop by and take a few photos of. It's grand structure that includes descriptive plaques that explain and pay homage to Washington's contributions. It's a short walk from the capital (2-3 minutes) and you can take advantage of the many other statues/monuments erected that explain a bit of the Virginia state history and the people contributed to the...

This was a wonderful park area with several historic monuments. The capital itself was closed at this time for some type of construction. There were several walking paths and you are very close to the canal walk and other downtown and historic places.
