They're still in the process of opening their tasting room, but we were visiting Roanoke and wanted to pick up a bottle or three. We reached out on Facebook and they were very helpful and responsive, even offering to meet us at their location for a sample while they were bottling, while recommending Roanoke shops where we could find their meads. Meeting at their location didn't fit our schedule, but we wound up purchasing a few bottles at Gladheart, and we're so glad we did! All three bottles we purchased are not overly sweet or dry like many meads we've tried have been; in our opinion, they're all well-crafted and full of complex and well-balanced flavors. The Lyre's Song is a bit dry and yeasty for our tastes, but still very good, about what we'd expect a traditional mead to taste like. Vambrace is our favorite, more off-dry with plum radiantly shining through. Rheda's Longing is a fantastic take on a mulled or spiced mead, with a deeply complex flavor that'll keep you warm, nostalgic, and happy all through the winter. We're looking forward to visiting their tasting room next time we're in Roanoke once it's...
Read moreFirst, just want to note that Google has the location WRONG. It is located downtown Roanoke across from Benny's Pizza. Atheling Meadworks has variety of nicely crafted meads to suite the palette of true mead lovers and those new to consuming the Vikings drink. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable of their products. Samples provided and flights served to share with others to find your Champion. Get glass full of your favorite and enjoy the atmosphere and the guest entertainment at giving times and days. When all is said and done, take a bottle or 2 home to enjoy with family and friends as these meads pair great with various deserts or your favorite cigar. Highly recommend to all to venture a visit here, enjoy a great drink, meet new friends, and build a story of having the mead of ancient gods and how you maybe related to one. Enjoy as I look forward to...
