TL;DR- The museum was listed as accessible, but it's not. It's too narrow and some of the flooring is too difficult to get a wheelchair across. The museum should not consider itself handicap accessible or wheelchair friendly.
We visited as a group on 6/19/25. The museum does have some really interesting things and the staff was very friendly. My low rating and frustration has to do with the fact that the website says the museum is accessible for wheelchairs. I even called to verify this before booking our tickets. Unfortunately after getting into the museum we realized it was actually not very accessible at all. The entrance area has a floor made of cement and rocks, which was very hard to get my chair across. Once we were further inside, we realized most of the museum was very tight quarters and I was either going to be in everyone's way, shoved around like furniture while others tried to get around me, or just unable to see the museum. There are are least 2 rooms we just didn't even bother going into at all. The staff heard us talking about the rooms we avoided and kind of chuckled saying "Yeah some of those rooms are really tight." To me this means you're aware of the difficulties your facility has for handicapped guests and could've conveyed those difficulties when I called. I certainly never expect everything to be accessible, especially in a town like St Augustine where buildings are all historic and very old. All I really want is honesty so I can plan accordingly. In this case we likely would've found somewhere for me to hang out while the rest of my group went through the museum. I'm really disappointed that we were told on the phone and website that the entire museum was wheelchair friendly. I'd highly encourage the staff to change how they view and discuss the accessibility of the museum so that people are not frustrated and forced to leave your museum because they do not have a way to enjoy it with...
Read moreI live like 3 hours from St Augustine so probably once a year we go get a airbnb and go do all of Saint Augustine for a weekend okay? I have been to that pirate museum probably 15 times and it is so cool all the stuff that they have in there and we just really have a great time I would recommend you follow the tour guide around at least somewhat like we would follow him into a room and listen to his thing and once he moved the crowd the next Room we would look at the stuff in the room a little bit more in depth and that worked pretty good if you never followed the pirate guy around ( I tried really hard just now I paused and I tried really hard to remember the pirate's name but I just can't do it, I went there in July so that dude that was the pirate was really great and did a really really great job I just can't remember his name sorry) you should definitely listen to that dude and he's going to say some really cool stuff and tell you a little bit about some of the artifacts there in the museum it's really interesting. We bought pirate coins in the gift shop I buy power coins every single time I go there, and they got a lot of little cool pirate decorations in pirate accessories that place overalls really good I really like it my kids love it and plus the pirate guy leading the tour he kind of was extra cool to the kids and just a really cool dude. So follow that guy listen to what he said then when y'all are done with the pirate guide, go back and look through the museum and look at all the really super cool little details and stuff they got in there. So in conclusion, that place is awesome, you can't go wrong there, you'll have a really fun time inside there. You're going to end up in this room that has cannons on the floor, you can " virtually" for the...
Read moreFull of really neat information and artifacts from pirates back in the day. Little kids, older kids, teens, adults.. you name it, everyone else's place! There's interactive things to do, like reading about all the different pirates via touch screen, 3D movie, Canon you can pretend fire, things you can lift to see how heavy it was back in the day, really cool artifacts surrounding the museum, a treasure hunt, & they even have things you can smell and "Guess what cargo they were carrying" leaving imagination up to you on that one, lol. Learn how to tie different knots, steer the boat and raise the flags, read the dying confessions of a pirate about to be hung, and last least you can audio here Blackbeard's capture & his death. They even have a really cool gift shop too. You'll walk out of there knowing a lot more than you did when you went in. Israeli interesting to know how all of a pirates affected St Augustine, to read their Captain logs and just learn about that time period from a pirates point of view. By found it particularly interesting when you showed all of the tools for surgery they used to use, and for what type of surgery. Cracked me up when there's this big terrible metal looking tool that's supposed to be for delicate brain surgery. Yikes. Very happy for modern day medicine! But definitely this museum is worth checking out especially if your into museums, artifacts, and history. You may not like pirates but will definitely walk out with much understanding of the influence they had on our culture, even today. St Augustine was definitely a starting point for a lot of culture changes. And this pirate museum, is a...
