If you found the Grotto at Josephine and St Marys sts go down the steps behind the tikki unbrellaed bus stop and turn to your left...under the st mary st bridge and the "you are here" map showing way to the pearl and all and then look up at the underneath of the next bridge. One of if not THE largest bachelor colonies of Mexican free-tailed bachelor bats that spend their summers here. In anticipation of th precise moment that their nightly feeding excursion begins, you may find yourself leaning in and moving closer and closer...but not too close! When it happens you may see one or two scragglers pop out and then blam! Literally 1000s and 1000s will whiz by you so quickly youll feel your hair blown back by the breeze they create. And it lasts for abt 20 minutes! Not sure if they are doing the tour yet, but dont worry! The bats dont know the difference! And if you wonder where the girls are, head up to the Bracken Bat cave. That where they head to have their young. You think Camden st bachelors were awesome? The Bracken cave hosts the Largest freetail bat colony in the world! its like comparing a fan to a tornado! Millions of female bats and their young hangout here. And they literally block out the sun and can be seen on satellite! you might want to leave your hat at home...

The other interesting information about this bridge is that it is home to a colony of bats. There were people seated, waiting for the bats to come out and many more just enjoying the San Antonio Riverwalk in the evening and walking over to the Pearl. As the sun began to set, the perch are illuminated by lighting from within each perch and it makes them glow. It is really a pretty art installment. The river barges that are out on the river are nicely lit up and have a very nice glow. They carried tourists and San Antonio residents alike that were out enjoying the riverwalk to the section of the Riverwalk that is known for the bats that live under the bridge. I hung out and waited for the bats, but only saw a couple fly out. Maybe I was in the wrong spot when they came out but nevertheless, it was a beautiful evening and coming out just to see the perch, people watch, hopefully catch a sighting of bats from under the bridge...
