I rarely get five stars. It only goes to my favorite places in an area. Most people and San Bruno go out of the area. This is one of the few places That for example I have left San Francisco to go to that is in my own backyard because of its unique LAVA Root bar. This is on the northern end of downtown San Bruno. While most of the places here are dollar store type establishments, there are a few gems. Coffee places and bars serving alcohol are a dime a dozen. This is a great casual date lounge that serves Kava route in large wooden bowls that you drink with coconut shell type cups. The owner is always very friendly and courteous. While I don’t know the exact history of the Kava Root, there is a definite Fujian, Tongan feel to the place. There is a pool table, a couple of TVs that usually have sports on, and A gift shop type area Right at the entrance. The shirts in the gift shop area At the entrance sort of masks the lounge area and doesn’t do much for curb appeal. However, this is San Bruno, a suburb which is not really known for its aesthetics. Bottom line is that you’re coming here for a unique product and a very friendly business owner. The drink has a very earthy tea flavor that you don’t add sugar to. There is a calming buzz affect that is sometimes described as a sensation of dental Novacaine. No caffeine jitters , no alcohol hangover – just a calming tea for mid afternoon or late evening. You can buy Kava tea packets to go but they are not as potent as the ground route that he serves. One large serving for two people is only $15! It is open during the pandemic as people are appropriately spaced. A hidden gem amongst...
Read moreThe Kava Bar has been such an awesome place to be able to attend over the last couple of years. After suffering troublesome nerve pain from a car accident, I soon discovered Kava from a friend and found how much it helped with the chronic burning/aching pain I experienced. Though you may not like the taste initially it is a great substitute for individuals who are trying to steer clear of drinking habits. The environment is friendly as well as the folks who go there. I highly recommend trying it and giving...

The atmosphere is very relaxed and a great place to sit back, enjoy each other's company with some wonderful, tongue-numbing, and happy-making...
