Liberty Station is a park maintained mostly by the City of San Diego. Formally the Naval Training Center, where thousands of service men and women began their careers in the Navy since the Spanish American War. The training center was decommissioned by the Navy and sold to the City of San Diego.
Extensive walking paths, green, open areas for children, bbq stations, picnic tables as well as an excellent food court in the upscale Public Market gives this place an eclectic feel to live and play. A prominent memorial to 52 ships and crew that fought and died in WW1 and WW2 is decorated with American flags on special dates throughout the year.
Liberty Station is a 5 minute car ride to San Diego international Airport. There are several mid level hotels within walking distance of the Liberty Station Conference Center. The Conference Center sits beside the USS Recruit, a landlocked training ship. The landscaping is maintained by the hotels and restaurants around the Conference Center. It is always clean and green and well maintained.
The City park has finding problems which lead to some areas being in disrepair with broken and malfunctioning sprinklers. A renewal of growth in the brush areas after heavy rains makes it more pleasant. The walking path is interspersed with areas of new growth and glorious blooms of spring flowers and the puddles of standing water from leaking water pipes.

Read moreI love coming to Liberty station, especially when the pumpkin patch is in the middle of the grassy area. There is always so much to do... my kids love watching the airplanes take off and fly low because downtown is not far and the airport is so close. I often see wedding parties and large groups getting together at the various locations here. We like the Corvette diner (super kid friendly and fun for everyone) but they also love the giant koi ponds in the massive Stone Brewery located in the very middle of Liberty Station area... and there is Mini Golf next to the Dirty Birds bar and restaurant (Great for wings, draft beer, and watching a ballgame)
Also worth mentioning, the Marketplace and all the local art studios, they aren't ALL open ALL the time, but during the peak hours (mid-late afternoon, and weekends) it is a busy crowded spot with lots of cool things...
