I cannot for the life of me understand how this place is rated so high. The San Remo is NOT a hotel, it is a private-room hostel. If it advertised itself as a such, it might deserve a better rating, but since it's advertising itself as a 2-star hotel, then it deserves a 1-star rating, at best.
There are a lot of positives about the San Remo, but you have to understand what you're getting when you book there. If you're expecting something like a Motel-6 (which is a 1-star hotel), you're going to be shockingly disappointed.
The best way to describe the San Remo is like renting a room in a house b/c a bedroom is the only private space you will have. "What about the bathrooms?" you ask... Well, THERE ARE NO BATHROOMS. Now you might be thinking that I mis-typed that & assume I meant that there were no private bathrooms & that there were only community bathrooms. Well, you'd be wrong. I literally meant that there are no bathrooms. The sinks are at 1 end of the public hallway. So you wake up in the morning, walk out of your bedroom, & see people brushing their teeth & shaving in the hallway. Toilets & showers? In this hallway next to the sink there is an alcove w/ 4 doors. Behind each of these doors is small room, a little bigger than an outhouse, w/ 2 of the rooms containing toilets, & 2 of the rooms containing showers. Now the showers have a shower curtain so that you can hang a towel & clothes so you don't have to walk out into the hallway totally naked, but the space is so small that it's like changing inside a phone booth (for those of you old enough to remember what those are...), a wet phone booth at that.
Maybe guests will accept these types of accommodations given the price, but they have to be open about these accommodations so that guests can make an informed decision. The San Remo clearly is not open about the amenities; there is nothing about them on its website & it calls itself a hotel, which it is not. Calling itself a hotel (particularly in the US) comes with it some expectations, incl. a private bathroom. For this reason, I was horribly disappointed when I stayed at the San Remo & will never...
Read moreMum and I stayed at the San Remo San Francisco hotel for four nights, as part of a bigger trip in the USA. It had been Mum's pick due to the location in Fisherman's Wharf and price... As someone who prefers an ultra-modern aesthetic in hotels, I was dubious but went along with it.|First, please know that the hotel is above a restaurant so reception is up a flight of stairs, with some rooms sharing that same floor but others on the second and third floors. We were on the second floor.|The photos give you an idea of how the hotel looks so use them as a fairly faithful guide. However, I would say two things:|1) The room we had was absolutely tiny. Too small for two adults really. There was room for two single beds and a small cupboard but not much room to manoeuvre or put luggage. Our room also had a window...to the hotel landing. This meant it could get stuffy and dark. |2) We knew going in that the bathrooms were shared but let me just clarify, there are toilet cubicles (for want of a better word) then an open-shared-space where the washbasins are located, and two separate shower rooms with changing facilities (on our floor, anyway). I had been expecting a complete bathroom so thought I'd make clear what to expect (it does make the morning a little awkward when people are trying to brush their teeth).||The bathrooms are kept clean and the hotel is very generous with provisions of toiletries and fresh daily towels (albeit the towels may need an update soon).||On the subject of cleanliness however, I would urge them to focus on the carpets a little more, as both the shared space and our room were in definite need of a vacuum. ||Check-in and check-out process were seamless.|Great to have use of a water machine, microwave and coffee machine on site.||Overall, if you're a fan of the interior or can appreciate the nod to a precious era, and can cope with shared facilities, you can have a good-value, well-located stay in...
Read moreI have previously stayed in the San Remo Hotel around 2012 and loved it at that time! We returned in March 2024 as it provides a very cost effective offering when compared with other SF hotels and we felt it was a great option for us.||The staff were very friendly and helpful and happy to offer assistance. Though the showers and toilets are shared (we were aware of this in advance as the hotel does specify this numerous times!), they were cleaned at least once a day and were very clean and well stocked. We loved that the hotel provided small things to help make our stay more convenient i.e. cotton buds, shampoo, coffee machine, cold water, microwave. Having had an internal room on my last visit, I requested a room with a window and the hotel were happy to accommodate this. ||The hotel is based in a fantastic location, only a ten minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf. There is a good supermarket (Trader Joes) a few minutes walk away which was very convenient.||A couple of downsides to note from our trip; the noise from the street generally wasn't bad, but there did seem to be daily bin emptying outside and it was always early (around 6am) which was pretty noisy. Obviously this isn't something the hotel can control and we got used to it after a few days, but just something to be aware of. Also, tripadvisor says the hotel has a self-serve laundry and vending machine but we checked with the front desk and they said the laundry is for the hotel only and there was no vending machine. However, if you need to do laundry, there's a laundromat just up the street.||Overall, I would definitely return to the San Remo as we loved our trip and felt the San Remo was a great...
