It is actually challenging to write a review on The Aesthetic Union because words aren't enough. The process, team, and space collectively make for an incredible blend that one must really experience for themselves to fully appreciate. Writing this review as a client, workshop participant, and someone who literally just walked off the street and asked questions.
My first introduction to the AU was about 6-8 months ago. I happened to park my car near the shop and was curious. It initially looked like a store for studio supplies. After a little strolling it became easy to make the connection that this was an interdisciplinary space. The letterpresses and printed material in the back give a nod to type and interaction. After asking a few questions about the machines and project I discovered the space is run by people who demonstrated a natural creative ability and a deep understanding of their craft.
Next, I signed up for a few workshops with James Tucker. Each workshop is a little different. The ones I've attended have been engaging and insightful. First, there is a brief introduction on how the shop is run and what they make. Then, participants mix ink and operate the Vandercook Printing press. Lastly, you'll take home beautiful works on paper (prints, cards, etc.). James is extremely passionate about his work and uses his artistic mastery to teach and design work that is both comforting and socially impactful. This is a great place to collaborate and meet other designers and creative practitioners.
After understanding a bit more about print I thought it might be interesting to add prints as an element for a piece that was performed by an ensemble at San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Daniel and James met with myself and the composer to decide on the best way to execute our vision. This was a very small run of about 200 prints. A lot of people would not have taken on a job this small. Additionally, I would consider myself as sort of a brand new client in that I had never done a project like this before. Daniel worked with me for months to make sure it was exactly the way I had imagined it. The prints turned out beautiful. I was blown away with the patience and quality demonstrated on this project.
TL;DR
The Aesthetic Union makes gorgeous work. Vibes in the shop are cozy and non-judgmental. Would highly recommend them for their commitment to the craft and dedication to...
Read moreThe Aesthetic Union is a fine letterpress print shop located in the Mission District. I had the good fortune to attend a tour of the premises, and I found it fascinating & insightful.
James led us through the quaint shop, introducing us to 2 vintage Heidelberg windmill presses & other printing apparatuses from years ago. I even had the chance to crank out my own letterpress card, which was really neat for a layperson like myself. I gave my masterpiece to my new friend, Timofer, from Bulgaria.
I asked if the ink James uses is soy-based. He responded by saying no, as he's against monocropping & GMO. I appreciate that, as I also agree with that philosophy. Unfortunately, I forgot what his inks are based of. I'm assuming petroleum.
At the front of the shop, a counter made out of an old tugboat has art tools for sale. Pencils, pencil sharpeners, calligraphy pens, erasers, etc. Sketchpads are on hand to try out your penmanship prior to making a purchase.
Service was great. James exhibits a passion for his craft. Besides business cards, Aesthetic Union creates silkscreen, mimeograph, linoblock, flyers, wedding invitations, bookplates - you name it, they can make it. And, they create unique works of art with each commissioned job, sometimes not making a lot in money, but earning a lot with respect for the craft.
Aesthetic Union is located in the same building as Blue Bottle Coffee and is next to Heath Ceramics studio & store.
I had an informative time taking a tour of Aesthetic Union. I learned a lot about printing presses & the upkeep of trying to keep these machines going. We're talking duct tape & chewing gum, MacGyver-style. During my trip to San Francisco, I'm glad I had the opportunity to visit the Aesthetic...
Read moreI was hired to do a soft brand audit for KQED this Spring. Nearing towards the finish line, the client expressed interest in celebrating the refresh with its 500+ staffers in a memorable and fun way. I came up with an interactive wheel chart design and immediately thought of The Aesthetic Union to execute the job. As a matter of fact, I designed it around them—taking full advantage of their capabilities. The result included: letterpress, hot foil stamps, 4 spot colors, die cut, and custom rivets—all assembled by hand.
There is nothing these guys can’t do and their service and attention to detail is spot on. Daniel helped me from concept to completion and offered honest advice for the best outcome. James oversaw the whole production. The entire process was a collaborative effort between myself and the AU crew; and it was a beautiful one.
Needless to say— the client was over the moon with the final product. I couldn’t be happier. Hire The Aesthetic Union, they’ll make you look good and bring more business to...
