My recent stay at Sunset Motel was an absolute nightmare. I went in expecting a clean and comfortable place to stay, but what I got was a disaster from start to finish. It was painfully obvious that the people running this motel couldn't care less about basic standards. Revolting Smoke Infestation: Upon arrival, I was greeted not by fresh air, but rather by an overwhelming stench of smoke that permeated every corner of the room. Despite the explicit prohibition of smoking, it was evident that the previous occupant had flagrantly disregarded the rules, leaving me to suffer the consequences. The nauseating fumes made me physically ill, leaving me sickened and unable to sleep throughout the night. Adding insult to injury, the motel staff's solution to the problem was to offer me a can of Fabreeze, which was utterly inadequate in remedying the pervasive smoke odor. It is insulting and utterly ridiculous to expect a paying customer to bear the burden of rectifying such a fundamental issue. Inadequate Plumbing: A motel staff member entered the room and instructed me to turn off the water supply to the toilet behind the unit. I was explicitly told not to turn it on unless necessary for flushing. As a paying customer, I expected a room with fully operational plumbing, not one that resembled a glorified porta-potty. Deplorable Hygiene Standards: The state of cleanliness within the room was nothing short of deplorable. Filth adorned the walls, windows, and doors, while the exterior of the refrigerator was disgustingly dirty, appearing as though something had been spilled all over it. The floors were so filthy that the bottoms of my socks were left black. Holes in the walls and a toilet seat in dire need of replacement only added insult to injury. Noise Disturbances: There were loud noises emanating from the walls throughout the night, possibly from neighboring rooms' bathroom fans. Additionally, the bathroom fan in my room was excessively loud, disrupting my sleep. Internet Dysfunction: Your advertised Wi-Fi service was nothing short of a joke. It was your own staff who showed me the absurd ritual of repeatedly plugging and unplugging cables just to access the internet. Such incompetence is utterly unacceptable, especially when considering the potential safety hazards posed by exposed wires, and that it did nothing to make the internet work. Despite being advertised as included in the stay, the Wi-Fi connection was unreliable and never worked, despite the required manual manipulation of wires, which is not the responsibility of the guest. Anyone even considering a stay at this establishment should run and seek accommodations elsewhere. Save yourself the trouble and find somewhere else to stay. Trust me, even camping in a tent would be a step up from...
Read moreFound this place on Priceline for a reasonable price. While it is located on State Street, it's far away from the beach/stores area and is pretty close to the 101 freeway. The motel has a small private parking lot. It looks like there should be enough spaces for one car per room, but the lot got pretty crowded at night and there was some illegal parking going on :P
The lady in the office was nice and checked us in very quickly. Our room was pretty nice but had a weird smell to it. The beds were pretty comfortable and there was good lighting in the room. The bathroom was nice and looks like it was recently renovated. I really liked the sink area--the countertop was nice, there was a large mirror, and the sink/faucets were good. The bath/shower was okay, the one weird thing was that the water would come out yellow at first whenever we turned it on.
The room comes with a fridge and microwave. We didn't use the microwave but we did use the fridge. And what greeted us when we opened the fridge door but a bug inside... thanks for the welcome -_- They had a nice Samsung TV but the remote took forever to work and our channel options seemed really limited so I gave up after a bit and just focused on my laptop. They provide complimentary WiFi, which is nice, except it seemed a bit spotty. I had to keep on restarting my laptop to reconnect to the WiFi and that got to be really annoying... and since I was tired, I ended up giving up and going to bed before 10PM :P
It took me a while to fall asleep though, and I would wake up randomly throughout the night, because the walls are very thin. Our neighbours to one side were very talkative so I kept on hearing them, and I could also hear the cars driving by. Good thing I was really tired though since I would quickly fall back asleep. Like most places, this place has its pros and cons, but it was a good rate for Santa Barbara. They also provide a complimentary breakfast in the office from 7:30-9AM. I took a look when I checked out in the morning and it looked like they provide coffee and muffins. My mum and I went to McDonald's down the street instead but it's nice to have that option. If I could give half stars I would give them 2.5, but since I can't I'll give...
Read moreThis was a pleasant and unexpected gem. We didn't expect much since it was a motel and we needed to quickly reserve a place for a weekend in Santa Barbara. It was one of the more reasonably priced options, but it turned out to be much more than we expected. The service was excellent. We arrived late after a long drive, and my daughter needed to use the bathroom. Since there wasn't one in the lobby, the service lady quickly gave her a key card to go to our room while I took care of check-in.
The rooms were clean, with super comfy beds and very white sheets. The bathroom was spacious, and the shower had warm water immediately. The furniture and walls/doors are a bit run-down, but as long as the beds/bathroom is clean, I can deal with it. The Wi-Fi was very slow.
The location is perfect—close to everything. There's a Target and a mall nearby, as well as several convenience stores (7-Eleven) and fast food restaurants (McDonald's, Wingstop, Chipotle, Starbucks, etc.), and grocery stores (Whole Foods, Trader Joe's).
Iif you stay on the first floor, you might hear people talking as they walk by, and the door has gaps, so it can get pretty cold at night. Despite these minor issues, we would definitely stay here again, as it was reasonably priced. I noticed in the reviews that some people paid much more than we did, so if the price were higher, I might consider other options. For what we paid, it...
