The last two shows that I have attended (Broadway in Black, Birmingham to Broadway, and Ali) were incredible--a huge step up in professionalism and acting skills, new male voices, soul stirring music and sound, amazing period-perfect costuming, and all in comfortable seats.
It is sometimes hard to endure one-man shows; however, when the acting, music and settings are magnificent, the performances go way too fast--one wants more. Also dear to me is your truth in production, and scripts that gets to the heart and soul with authentic Black history that one can not only see, but smell, feel and believe. It is refreshing (especially in Ali) how you unabashedly and without apology "hit hard" the awful perceptions and denials of those who continue to believe Black folks are inferior and deserve to be treated with disdain or as invisible. It also portrayed the confidence and genius that young and old should aspire to. Your productions, like Ali, are opening the minds and heart for many. I applaud your efforts, and hope that you give us more authentic stories about our history, our wisdom, our genius as well as our faults--the truth. Carolyn...
Read moreOne of the greatest elements of southern Florida. It was both a privilege and honor to become connected with such a talented troop of individuals. Honestly, the level of talent from the mind of Creative Director and Visioneer, Nate Jacobs and the absolute star quality talent that he helps develop would blow your mind. It's interesting how Broadway isn't knocking on his door weekly to create something. His creativity and calling on talent that can match it, embrace it and relay it to an audience is uncanny and absolutely a gift from God! I can't say enough about what I've seen, heard, experienced and get to be a part of. I haven't even mentioned the new state of the art performance facility/mainstage the troop is constructing. This troop will continue to change culture and take audiences out of their comfort zone. Any of their shows are so packed with wonderful arrangements that it will hard to stay in your seat! I'm hearing great things about their 2020 lineup and urge you to get season...
Read moreIf you love live performance with great energy, wonderful ensemble and solo singing and really good dancing, you should definitely book an evening at West coast Black Theater's "Black Nativity." The theater, newly upgraded I gather, is comfortable and intimate with good sound. The cast for this production includes marvelous adult soloists, especially the angel. Included are teen members whose contributions are professional and disarming. I have never empathized so much with the pregnant Mary, desperate for a place to live down and give birth. You will bounce, you will clap you will feel and share the electric enthusiasm-- or be declared dead at the scene! My only critique is that the show seemed a bit long. But the themes were great. Of course, the show is skewed to a Christian message, but the second half in particular reminds us of the Christian message of Peace in Earth, Goodwill to All. A message for all...
