Soo Locks Park — Attraction in Sault Ste. Marie

Soo Locks Park is the best place in town to watch the freighters! They have a really nice multilevel viewing platform that you can watch the freighters come through. Although, this year, the viewing platform and the visitors center are closed due to COVID. It is free to enter the park. If you have any bags, the guards might check them upon entry, but that's totally normal and you should not have a problem with that. The park is actually quite large. There's an upper and a lower level to it. Most people stay on the upper level of the park because that's where the visitors center and viewing platform are. With those being closed, the only bathrooms open in the park were those on the lower level (that I never knew existed until this year). Not many people go to the lower part of the park. There are stairs that go down to it, but there's also a sidewalk if you go around the outer edge of the park that will get you down there as well. There's a beautiful fountain on the lower part, and it is an equally beautiful spot to watch the ships come in. The viewing ramps are closed because of the pandemic (disappointing since it was raining, but understandable), but through the fence we were able to still get a good view of the locks and the ship moving through them. There were a fair number of people nearby to watch, but I'm sure we could have spread out a bit and still had a good view. The guard at the entrance to the park was nice, and just asked us if we had any weapons, drugs, etc on us (doesn't seem like effective security but again, pandemic, so I understand). Great park to view the freighters traveling through the locks. In the summer they have free concerts, Music in the Park, every Wednesday night starting at 7:00pm, weather permitting. Bring your own chairs as there is not seating provided. The bands are mostly from around the state and the best one is the Petoskey Steel Drum Band from the high school in Petoskey, Michigan.
