I work in a visitors information center in Bay Area Houston, and believed for many years that we had in Seabrook, Texas the finest array of retailers of fish and other seafood on the entire Gulf Coast, from Brownsville, Texas to Key West, Florida.
Then in 2008, Hurricane Ike destroyed the entire Seabrook Waterfront. Not a single one of the great Seabrook seafood markets was left standing, only a soggy, desolate, break-your-heart scene. When our visitors center was put back in action 3 months after the storm, I began getting calls asking, "Is Rose's Seafood back in operation?" I said several were back in operation in temporary buildings and operating. But not Roses's yet.. "What is special about Roses/?" I began to ask.
The answer, always, was, "We're a sushi place, and we must have FRESH, top quality fish. We can rely on Rose's."
At Rose's Seafood, what you're looking at in their sparkling beds of ice is what they tell you it is, whether it is fresh or "fresh-thawed," farm raised or wild caught, whether the shrimp is Gulf shrimp or imported. I have never had a "favorite" among the seafood markets on our waterfront, they are all back with huge new buildings built to the new hurricane code, and all are good. There's a lot of competition down there, prices are low and quality is always very good, and I'm very proud of our Waterfront Seafood District.
But somehow I zeroed in on Rose's, and truly love the place. My daughter is a fine chef in East Texas. I send her fresh frozen seafood from time to time in a special insulated shipping container. I wish you could have heard her when she called me today after she thawed and pan sauteed a cut of Rose's Scottish wild-caught salmon for dinner last night. She was accustomed to a very expensive salmon shipped to her from Seattle, and thought she was getting the best. "Dad, this is the BEST! There could not be better anywhere!"
Load a styro box (or buy one from any market here) in the car and come visit our Seabrook seafood market area on the skinny little peninsula that juts out into Galveston bay on 11th Street, the Waterfront District. You will get a surprise at the colossal selection in these sparkling new stores
If you want a real treat, buy a cut of fresh caught Scottish salmon at Rose's. Cook it the same day or no later than the day after and you'll have a new seafood experience. All it needs is a basting of butter before cooking and maybe a sprinkle of Old Bay or some basil. Yum! You can freeze fresh fish without any discernible loss of quality for three or four...
Read moreI worked at a grocery store in the Clearlake area for over a decade and could always tell when a customer had "fresh" seafood even before their shopping cart made it to my checkout stand. Eventually I noticed the seafood shops in Seabrook while taking my boat out into Galveston bay. I also noticed that there was one seafood shop that was always busier than all the other locations in the area. Although I can't stand to wait in a line; I bit the bullet to see why everyone was willing to be crammed packed into this little seafood shop. Needless to say, I never bought seafood from anywhere else except of course restaurants or when I need to send seafood out of state over the past 40+ years. Funny thing is some of the restaurants I frequent get their seafood from the same place I buy mine. Rose's has the best seafood. Roses' prices are really great, especial when compared to the restaurant prices and the seafood shop that I use to send seafood out of state. I have tried other seafood shops near Roses and have yet to make a purchase from any one of them for a variety of reason. Now when I go to Roses; they remember everyone of my family member's names and acknowledge us each and every time we stop by even though we typically only buy between $50.00 and $150.00 a trip. Roses is no longer in the little shop. After Ike they relocated to a significantly larger location close to the original shop but the new shop is elevated . Roses has significantly more parking spaces available and I rarely have to feel like a sardine in a can while waiting to make my selections. Now all I need to do is learn how to pack fresh seafood from Rose's into a shipping container and get UPS or FedEX to deliver to our daughter in 6 hours who lives in Flagstaff for less than the $400.00 dollars the other seafood...
Read moreThis is another one of Houston's best kept secrets, a locals type place. Dont be put off by the exterior, there is plenty of parking also. We went on a Sunday around noon to find it moderately busy. Inside they have a large wraparound bar with plenty of seating and TVs to enjoy, also a traditional dining area with tables and booths. Once seated we were immediately served with menu's and drinks. The menu is fairly large ranging from appetizers, sandwiches salads pizzas, pastas, chicken, veal and fish they also have house specialty which includes pork chops, lasagna, shrimp and scallops. Tyler was our server and did an amazing job. We started off with the potato skins and fried ravioli they were both delicious and good size portions, for my entree I chose a small garden salad and the chicken with spinach calzone. The calzone was incredibly large and could have easily been split with another person, If you have a sweet tooth they also offer several desserts Definitely very good food at a reasonable price, for what this place lacks in ambiance it makes up for with the quality of the meals. do yourself a favor stop in at least once to give this...
