First, note that the new sign at the entrance calls it Thurnau Memorial Park, though Maps and even the street sign pointing to it a couple blocks away still call it Lakewood. It's a pleasant park for strolling or picnicking, with kid-friendly cycling trails and a playground. But mostly, it's one of the best disc golf courses in the state. 20 holes, most with multiple basket locations for variety and concrete benches at the tees for those busy days. Long throws and elevation changes make it interesting. Add in an active club that maintains and rearranges the course, and runs a well-stocked disc store with guys who know the support, and you have a near-perfect experience. There a couple of downsides, just to keep you rooted in reality: The lake shore has signs warning about toxic bacteria or algae or something. If you get wet for any reason, you should wash it off. The restrooms are locked up over the winter. Gotta use the plastic outhouse. There are no tee signs. If you're new here, take a photo of the map sign at the practice putting green. (Did I mention there's an excellent practice putting green?) Or latch onto another player who can guide you around. There are some long, strange jumps from one basket to the next tee sometimes, so take that map photo. Your first drive will be across a big pond. If you're new at this, don't panic - there's a closer tee along the road for a shorter, safer drive. And take comfort that #1 is the only one involving throwing across a pond or lake. #6 has you throw from near the playground over the tees that line a stream. Beginners can walk to the right and avoid that hazard, if desired. If your disc does go in the drink, the pro shop has a thing you can borrow to drag the pond. And you wrote your name and phone number on every...
Read moreThis park is being destroyed by extremely rude and obnoxious frisbee golfers who YELL at you if you happen to unkowingly sit down on the grass to take a breath to move out of their path or they threaten to hit you with their frisbee. This has happened on two visits now. Who are these grossly juvenile mannered adults? Do they live nearby and pay taxes for this park? That and their open beer drinking and unleashed dogs they let run around and come at you? These jerks feel entitled to the park at the expense of all other neighborhood residents who want to enjoy it as well for walking, jogging, picnicking or just sitting. They also took out the only drinking fountain in the...
Read moreMy favorite folfing course in the seattle area. I have visited most folf courses around seattle, and this one is the best in my opinion. It has a lot of holes and is very spread out. Not a lot of trees or places to lose your discs if you have a general knowledge of the game. It has wide open fairways at times, and also areas where you need to carefully make a nice throw. Long enough to spend a good afternoon of playing, but also not long enough to be overwhelmed. Good for experienced players and...
