I am not an art fan, and less so when it feels as if its art that's been branded on everything, from puzzles, to prints, to official government stamps. It feels like the artist has sold their soul at times, and that they're making a buck instead of transposing their soul into paint and canvas.
Terry Redlin is on everything. Bread boxes, mouse pads, puzzles, paper and pencils. His later work lost some lustre in becoming an investment in where it can go instead of where it can take you. I came into this on the ground and with my mind made up. My wife likes this calendar artist, I'll stick to what I know.
Somewhere in the floors, between seeing his rendition of Bugs Bunny, listening to guides gush, reading about his love of friends, family and nature, and a loyalty to those people who gave him a chance, my mind turned a bit.
I could see age changing his work, the strokes of his brush growing into a new style, even if it was one I didn't necessarily love, and it was clear that his art was a gift to the world, as much as the building was a gift to the town he loved.
To take any sort of message from making good art available to the masses to enjoy was an embarrassing thought suddenly, and while art will forever go over my head unless its on bubble gum stickers, the man is someone worth appreciating for what he gave to us.

Read moreIf you love Art then this is definitely not to be missed. One of America's Greatest Painters (Terry Redlin) has All of his Original Paintings here. Instead of selling his Originals he had very fine lithographic prints made of the originals and signed and numbered them. This Museum is his Gift to his homestate of South Dakota and the People of America. The signed and numbered prints are for sale framed or unframed, and each picture has different prices It's based on the popularity and how many prints were made of each painting. Mr. Redlin has well over a hundred paintings and not only lithographic prints, but also Artist Proofs printed on canvas signed and also signed and numbered as well. His artwork is beautiful and also is a little bit on the expensive side. But very well worth the price. Just like other artwork peices they usually go up in price. I have been a fan and a collector for years and all of my prior purchases have gone up substantially in today's market. I had to pick up another one while I was there. You don't have to spend a nickel if don't want to, admission is free and All of the lititure is free as well, and the staff is second to none. They are all knowledgeable about the artist and the museum and super friendly. This is a Definite, Do Not Miss for the Whole Family. Have a Great Time, Jim...
Read moreWe have appreciated Terry Redlin's work for a long time. Mr. Redlin was a local Watertown artist. 150 of his original works are housed in this museum, which was designed by his son. It sits on several acres of parkland, ideal for outdoor weddings, photos, or other events. Some of the buildings are available to rent for this. Mr. Redlin had the museum built to house his works as a gift to the people of Watertown. Therefore, there is no admission fee. Guests are free to wander among his works without an escort, and read the descriptions that explain his inspiration for the piece. Guided tours are also available. He has done several series and my favorite is the 'America the Beautiful' series. There is also gift shops where many of his works can be purchased. They will ship to you if you cannot take the piece with you. We've done that twice and are very pleased with our purchases. Everything arrived in pristine condition. Ordering can also be done from his website. Elevators are available for wheelchairs.
If you are from the area, you might recognize several local scenes. But even if you are not, come and enjoy this wonderful place and the slice of Americana that Terry Redlin's art is.
There is plenty of parking and the...
